Mary, Queen of Scots
I saw this at a test screen a while back. Its good, dont be put off by Ronan looking like a irritated pigeon on the poster.
Whilst I'm not sure how historically accurate the movie was, the few battle scenes were cracking and the movie makes good use of the gorgeous scenery of the Highlands (if you havent been up there, why are you even living in england for). Mary's complete lack of today's modern assumption that England are superior opponents is refreshing (I mean one on one I'd back a bonnie Scot, tougher genes, but England tend to have depth of numbers). Its certainly a story worth telling too, she had a rumbustious life.
We were lucky enough to get a really big screen to see it on and it pa*d off for the scenery.
3.5 stars, 4 if you are from across the border.

Re: Mary, Queen of Scots
Having seen a recent BBC drama-doc about MQS on TV I kept expecting to see Neil Oliver (long haired Glaswegian TV historian) pop up in this. Indeed I'm sure I saw him once it twice in the background!
I thought the scenery and the story were great, but great chunks were left out, like the passage of several decades of imprisonment, with more emphasis on the sexual shenanigans between several male characters. (Not something I remember being taught in history. Lol). I did find some of the scenery irritating in that I know where the historical locations were meant to be and they looked nothing like it. Holyrood Palace for example looked more like a remote highland castle.
Not 100% sure if there was any need for this film though as other recent versions are there. A bit like remaking Braveheart with Channing Tatum.

I didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would because I thought it was factually inaccurate and lacking in detail, so in my mind ‘what was the point of it?’. The ending seemed a bit rushed. It felt as if if she was imprisoned for two minutes.

Re: Mary, Queen of Scots
I saw this today and must admit to absolutely loving it. I thought the acting was very good and the scenery speaks for itself.
Is it an accurate representation?. . . probably not, though I cannot detail which parts . . .I just enjoyed it as a story/film.
Marks 9/10

Re: Mary, Queen of Scots
This was a film which belonged to Saoirse Ronan and she was convincing as an impulsive, if naive, Mary. I was underwhelmed by Margot Robbie as Elizabeth, to be honest, but I see that she has picked up a number of awards nominations so I must be wrong. David Tennant clearly enjoyed himself as John Knox too!
Plenty of fictional interpretation of historical facts which means it heads straight into the usual criticism for being inaccurate but if you put that to one side it was enjoyable enough.

Agree with poster above, Saoirse was great, but for once Margot Robbie just didn't convince, felt like a hammy performance. Not a fan of David Tennant, but he wasn't as bad as he normally is.
Its fairly enjoyable, without doubt inaccurate, which makes the whole thing seem unneccessary.
2/5.

Re: Mary, Queen of Scots
Not sure what I was expecting, but I must admit I wasn't as impressed by it as I thought I would be... I rather much preferred The Favourite to be honest.
