Problems with WeTicketIt

#1 Post by steve9872 » Sat Jan 26, 2019 1:36 pm

WeTicketIt have launched an attack against this site, MSE, and probably others.
All SeeItFirst** links on these sites will at the least take you to a maintenance page. This is achieved by scanning the message packets at their end and if a known IP address of our site is detected, then you are automatically redirected to the maintenance page. Basically they know you clicked on a link from here.

The simplest solution is to copy the link and paste it in a new tab. That way the only IP address they can detect is yours so no redirection away.
You have to use RIGHT click and "copy link" or similar as FMUK truncares the visible link. Highlight and copy will fail every time.
Interestingly, opening the link in a private/incognito window from the right click menu actually works. Probably because it has to open a new window, copy the link there and then browse.

There are other links which are sent out in invites. Its really not worth posting them as the original link is likely to only work the once and the end link will just redirect you away. The poster may not realise this as the cookie has been set properly on their system. The easiest way to check these links is to open a private/incognito window and check it there.

** SeeItFirst links are of the form www.weticketit.com/seeitfirst/........
Other sites can use different links and are not currently affected by this attack. eg Saga use www.weticketit.com/saga/.....

EDIT:
For those posting links, please use the noref tag around any link you post. What it does is remove any reference to this site and this allows everyone to just click on the link and avoid the maintenance page completely.

How to use the noref tag.

Simple, there are 2 ways
1) Highlight the link and click on the noref tag
or
2) Click on the noref tag then paste the link.

Wouldn't it have been better to just add the simple instruction "copy and paste link in new tab" to eligible posts in free movies?

It's not really an attack if they're just trying to get their tickets used as intended but they could see this, think it's a war and just make more screenings invite only?

Actually, if you put in front of any link and after it, it doesn't truncate the link. I've just edited that Free Films post accordingly. The Full editor allows you to choose URL (between Img and Flash) to make this process easier. Just take care to insert the link between these two html codes. This will make it easier for people on mobile devices to copy the links as you can't right click on an iPad or smartphone.

That would be silly, Who would they send invites to? Bear in mind that they want full screenings and invite only screenings are usually empty.
Its also rather easy to get around the link only working from the advertiser's site. Just post a link to the page on the advertisers site instead.
If they want a war, the best they could manage is to inconvenience us a bit or lose their entire customer base.

On a smartphone, press and hold brings up a menu similar to a right click menu on a desktop/laptop. I believe that IOS does much the same with click and hold.

The most disposable part of any of these online schemes are people. They could just go to any ISP or SIM or loyalty rewards provider they haven't worked with before and trade free movie tickets for an entirely new mailing list if they really wanted to lock it down.

Maybe that's all they wanted, just some indication that an advertiser was getting hits too. We could give them an extra click or at least leave the option to.

Appreciate the work you've put in to provide help but just think it's best not to rile them. Thought we were doing well here to not be included on the feedback surveys under the question "where did you get tickets" but clearly we're also on their radar.

They could do that, but they don't dare. We are an unusual group of people. How many times have you tried to get a friend to come along to a screening only for them to let you down, mostly without warning, and then you gave up asking. We are the people who will use the tickets, will be the bums on seats, will turn up. Alienate us and the screenings will be empty.

SFF have always hated sites like this. They've made it quite clear over the years.
Often the tickets are aimed at a specific demographic.
This is nothing new.

I've tried to follow your instructions, Beate but it doesn't still won't take me to the booking page. This is no doubt down to my sheer incompetence with my iMac-- it takes me to a listing for weticket and when I get on the site it asks for the code. When I put in what I think is the code (from what is listed on the end of the link), it says the code is invalid. Most grateful for any help (remember I am an idiot so please write accordingly with simple instructions!). Best thanks.
