My instructions were for people posting a link. Steve9872's instructions are for people accessing a link - copy the link instead of clicking on it from here, open a new browser window and paste it in the address bar there. That should work.

Obviously you are doing something wrong.
Beate's instructions are only to be used for posting links on this site. Using the /url tag prevents it displaying as truncated, which allows highlight, copy and paste in a new tab.
That is the ONLY reason for doing so.
It doesn't prevent the maintenance page problem, at all. That is all addressed in the first post here. It makes my warning about truncated links unnecessary.
Just go back to the first post and follow my instructions.
