Captain Marvel

#1 Post by tonethestone » Tue Mar 05, 2019 11:06 pm

Lucky enough to see this earlier today with a friend who works for a newspaper. Super strict security!

I’m not a huge Marvel film fan, really didn’t like Infinity War.

This was a decent enough film, like first Thor film in that it feels more independent than the overblown marvel films. The new Captain character is great. Has good laughs, the final third is good, and it’s better than most recent marvel films but still can’t help feel we’ve seen it all before in some shape.

3/5.
Upcoming films want to see;
Top Gun Maverick
MI 7 & 8
The Many Saints of Newark
Ghostbusters : Afterlife

Best films seen recently;
Tenet
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
In The Heights
A Quiet Place 2

bland, no feel good factor, saw it at midnight in westfield, only about 15 people in the 350 seat screen!

as bad as thor2, Guardians2, antman2 and ironman2 were. at least their main actors were likable.

2/10

its not bad, you just expect more form a movie that carries the brand name in its title. The lead is kinda ordinary down to earth personality despite her powers and being a test pilot, perhaps that put some people off since shes not as driven as Batman or complex as Tony Stark. Larson is just playing someone you might meet in the street, albeit with a look that says she could bat you one so watch it mate. Shes most fun in Terminator mode at the start.

Though it potentially could have been better or aimed higher or had more Easter eggs (or not have wasted Agent Coulson!) its in the end good enough as a pre-Endgame intro. There could have been more epic in it, but I suspect the idea is to tone down the epic in those films that precede the major Marvel releases (the Avengers team-up movies themselves), they did the same thing with the villain in Black Panther last year who wasnt particularly gripping. The effects are there if that you want, in spades. My only major issue is..what a waste of Couslson......come on!

3.5 stars.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

its fun and good SFX at start and end, bit somniferous in the middle. If its the SFX you are after though you will be treated in IMAX 3d, they really jump out and suits the large scale airborne/space combat.

The main character is somewhat overpowered so thats no real feel of a threat and shes a bit ordinary in personality, but i dont think it matters as Marvel wrap up the whole of phase 3 in the next movie so it doesnt matter who is added to the roster at this stage.

Saw it last week and thought it was ok but saw it again yesterday and gave it an improved score. Not the best from the Marvel stable but definitely watchable.
Marks 8/10
Preferred cinemas: Best: Glasgow Quay, Glasgow Braehead, Glasgow Renfield Street, Glasgow Fort & Paisley
Others I'd go to: Glasgow Showcase Baillieston
