Sorry We Missed You

#1 Post by ladams888 » Tue Oct 15, 2019 11:20 pm

Having tackled the maze of claiming welfare benefits in I, Daniel Blake, this time Ken Loach tackles the world of zero-hour contracts, parcel delivery drivers and carers. In order to try and save up for a deposit for a house, Ricky has decided to become self-employed by taking a franchise with PDF (Parcels Delivery Fast – based on another 3-letter delivery service). Although supposedly self-employed, he realises that he has no freedom in this job, has to work long hours in order to meet targets and cannot take any time off without being fined. Abby, his hard-working wife, is a carer on a zero hours contract. However, she cares too much for her “clients” as her employer likes to call them, and ends up working many unpaid hours in order to make sure that they are clean, comfortable and fed. The long hours worked by both his parents is having an effect of Seb, their disrespectful, delinquent teenage son, who cares more for leaving his graffiti tags all over the town than for school and family life. We gradually see Ricky’s family life start to disintegrate as he becomes trapped by debt and long hours away from home – from which there appears to be no escape.

It’s a gripping film and its two main characters are both played with great sensitivity by Kris Hitchen and Debbie Honeywood. Katie Proctor, as their daughter, Lisa Jane was a delight to watch. It’s not all doom and gloom and there are some light-hearted moments, but the message certainly hits home. I will never look at a delivery man in the same way again. 8/10

Harrowing and bleak: I, Daniel BLEAK 2.
A hard watch. Very realistic, so much so that it plays like a documentary at times just with no narration. Reckon it was shot in single takes to add to the realism as I noted quite a few fluffed lines.
Very unsatisfactory abrupt ending, but this will have been intentional and has the desired effect.
One to watch, but not watch again.

A very thought provoking film. How easily it was for him to get into debt to try and improve their quality of life but only to get themselves deeper into the mire.
An unsatisfactory abrupt end? No - there was no end because he was trapped and there was no way out for him or his family. Unfortunately too true in many families today.

I agree with the unsatisfactory abrupt ending! Quite sad and true to life for some families!

I've read a little about the partial inspiration for this film:
Spoiler
Show
The story takes partial inspiration from the experiences of Don Lane, a courier for DPD who died January 2018 after working through illness in the Christmas delivery rush. He had skipped several hospital appointments to treat his type 1 diabetes because he had been charged £150 by DPD when he missed deliveries to attend an appointment and feared further charges.

Very good bit of agitprop. Makes it very clear how, if we're fortunate enough not to be vulnerable right now, we all will be one day. Sadly, those in power will realise it for themselves too late.

Eat the rich, my friends.

Very 'Ken Loach' - following on from his excellent I Daniel Blake film some time ago highlighting the problems faced by so many working folk throughout the country today - but choosing to focus on individuals from Newcastle.
The film is very thought-provoking on a couple of issue it's easy to overlook.

When we look forward to (or even expect) 'next day delivery service' from a (usually) online supplier, it's easy to remain oblivious to the demands that imposes of those in the supply/delivery chain - and the poor working conditions many of them endure and the poor remuneration they receive - to satisfy our 'free delivery' expectations. If you ask those who deliver to your door "how long to knocking-off time" it's not uncommon to find they started before 6am and don't expect to be home until after 8.30pm

Perhaps not the main thrust of the film, but equally true, is the way in which those in the 'home care' are put upon and treated unfairly - in return for often going beyond the call of duty in looking after their 'clients'.

Sensitive acting from all concerned - and it ended leaving us with the question "Did they cope - or not?"
8/10

Had a second viewing of this tonight. Decided to count the fluffed lines. Gave up after about 40 and only half an hour into film. Was there no dialogue coach used? There is stuttering, stumbling over lines, starting speaking wrong line then quickly remembering correct line. I even think someone called another the wrong name. The closest I can relate this to is when soap operas do live episodes. I'd love to know if this was all intentional. If so I'm not sure what it's purpose was. If not then it is a pretty poor standard. Interested to hear what Loach has to say when this is released.

I agree that it was like a documemtary in some ways. i made the same comment when i gave my feedback after seeing it and found it a very real reflection of daily life for a lot of people.
