Aeronauts
getting into a balloon is always something i wanted to do so i wanted to see this. Having seen it I can safely say I wont ever get in one!
Sound and sky-scapes are the stars here but theres a plummy enough story too, even if the leads do feel a bit terminator indestructible.
I liked it, would look great in imax 4/5

Re: Aeronauts
Saw this at Wimbledon Odeon. Having seen some of the advance publicity for this film, I was really looking forward to it. It is the story of James Glaisher, one of the first meteorologists, who decides to try and beat the current altitude record in a balloon. With Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones starring, what could go wrong? Well, I find it hard to put my finger on it, but I was underwhelmed. It was “inspired” by true events – which means that the film-makers took the true events and changed them! Felicity Jones character, Amelia Wren, was pure fiction. So why on earth they chose to invent her character instead of using the real-life Henry Coxwell, who actually did accompany him on his balloon trips, beats me. It was probably something to do with being politically correct and showing that women can do exactly what men do. The problem was that this was in Victorian times, so the idea was just wrong. There was some good cinematography and plenty of CGI. Somebody had b*ght some children to the screening, and although they talked (and munched and crackled!) all the way through it, they all seemed to enjoy it. So probably better for a family outing rather than an evening screening. My favourite character -Posey the dog. You will see what I mean when you watch it! A mediocre film that pretends to be otherwise. 5/10

Re: Aeronauts
I watched this at the Sky screening last week and was really looking forward to it. Sadly it did not live up to expectations. I agree with ladams888 above re the choice of character to accompany him on the balloon trips . . .PC gone mad! As his partner in the trips was male then male he should have remained . . . I think the female character was added to appease the PC brigade of today and certainly there was no place for in Victorian times. I found the film slow and pretty uneventful apart from the near disaster scenes. I would struggle to watch this again.

Re: Aeronauts
Saw this yesterday at Manchester Printworks - with one of the more well-filled auditoriums for a preview.
The film was certainly blessed with plenty of stunt-action and/or creative photography but little of it was convincing. The Victorians might not have been blighted by the Health and Safety legislation of today, but no experienced balloonist would have attempted high altitude flight with so little protective clothing, or so few other precautions for their own safety.
This lack of realism set the tone for this picture -short on factual impressions of what actually happened and who the real principal characters were. As one review I saw elsewhere said - big on effect but short on substance.

Re: Aeronauts
How about instead of it being "PC gone mad", a film about two men in a hot air balloon wouldn't be as appealing?

Re: Aeronauts
Saw it during the BFI LFF. Really enjoyed it. Redmayne and Jones are a fantastic duo. I get it that some people would have preferred this story to be closer to the real thing, but I honestly didn't mind it at all as I didn't know the real story before going to see it...
I loved the CGI, was on the edge of my seat all through the balloon's journey (especially when they arrive at the very end of their capabilities), and I think the cast is strong enough to make it an enjoyable movie
