Judy and Punch

#1 Post by stuartboy » Sun Nov 17, 2019 1:49 pm

Really enjoyed this. Some stand out scenes of hilarity and some scenes of OMG cringe. Couldn't quite get my head around the accents though. A Screen Australia production with definite Irish voices, a couple of (dubious) Scottish characters and some definite English ones. All set in a German forest. Still...it worked.
Poor Toby.

That's the way to do it!

Saw this in Picturehouse Central this morning. This film tries to retell the story of Punch and Judy, but doesn’t quite succeed. We all know the story of alcoholic, wife-batterer, Mr Punch, his brow-beaten wife, Judy, the policeman, the dog, the crocodile and the sausages – all of which featured in this film – but the film didn’t quite pull it off. The script was poorly written, which made me wonder if I was watching a children’s film, but it was also very violent, which is probably why it has a 15 rating. Damon Herriman was a good choice for Mr Punch, as was Mia Wasikowska for Judy, but even they couldn’t save this mish-mash. After a promising start, where it appears to be set in the 1600’s the timing then seems to go all over the place – policemen didn’t start wearing a helmet until the 19th century; London was first referred to as the Big Smoke in the 19th century; Tai Chi in the forest, pull the other one!

It was a very dark film – but not at the very beginning as the cinema forgot to turn the lights off! Very unusual for a screening, we were subjected to 25 minutes of adverts at the very beginning (all with the lights on!).

I would wait for it to turn up on NetFlix. My score 5/10

I was there too! And the very long advert for the unpronounceable whisky was repeated! Some kind person had to run out and tell them to switch the lights off.

It started off well, and then went very weird. I thought it was going to be a biopic with that title, but the story is quite imaginative, but unfortunately seems to turned quite corny towards the end. Well acted by Damon Herriman and Mia Wasikowska though. 6/10
