That's brilliant Rawr+oxo! I like how your'e smartly investing given your student life budget on your health. The X box Kinect sounds really great and whilst it can never be a substitue for gym, it certainly serves as a great accompaniment to it.

The thing is we all have the resources to become healthy and fit. We theoretically shouldnt have to spend a penny on it, we have roads and parks to walk/run/exercise outdoors. Most of us have stairs either at work or home to climb and do step exercise and more importantly we have our own bodies to perform numerous kind of exercises.

But we all need motivation and guidance to perform the exercise. The X box kinnect fitness is a nice system that gives you programs, monitors your progress, and sets you goals. That's what we all need. Motivation and education to fill that missing element of pursuing our goals. I see the attraction of Weightwatchers, it has a group motivational factor which is great. I personally dont approve of WW myself, unfortunately because diet is actually focussed only on just losing weight but not on adapting a healthy/nutritious lifestyle for LIFE and does not focus on the fact the weight you should be losing is body fat. You lose weight all right with all these fad diets but not necessarily in the most healthy way, I see too many people losing the weight, but then putting back on with a vengeance. The reason is simple, you just cant sustain a strict fad diet for the rest of your life. Its all about reducing bit by bit (the magic 500 calories per day deficti for those who are a little distant from the healthy body fat percentage region).

I dont want to deter anyone who are currently on weightwatchers or other fad diets but I just want to add to your knowledge for your comtemplation. Something to think about.

Similarly with nutrition, the right stuff is out there to b*y but we are all b*ying the wrong stuff. You shopping is your where your diet control is. Get your shopping right and your nearly already there.

I lost 40kg or rather I reduced my body fat from a quite obese 41% down to 15% in by making simple changes gradually over time. and reducing my calories per day by 500. And of course exercising.

Why 500 calories? Its a magic number and forms part of a simple piece of arithmatic, here goes:

500 calories per day X 7 days in a week = 3500 calories per week

As you should know calorie is energy. Body Fat is a storage of energy. And it so happens 1lb of body fat = 3500 calories.

Therefore you lose 1lb of body fat per week by making your calorie consumption deficit by 500. Add exercise and you burn further fat up to the healthy maximum of 2lbs per week.

Now I only recommend you lose 1.5lbs per week, which is still a great rate. BUT NEVER try to lose more than 2lbs per week, in fact from my personal experience I will now say 1.5lbs per week. There are several reasons. You will suffer fatigue, both physically and mentally, your metabolism lowers, ie your body will think there is a shortage of food and will try to PRESERVE THE FAT instead and you will lose muscle and water instead. It simply is not HEALTHY to lose the weight too quickly and unfortunately many fads diets make you do this.

I lost my weight by an average of 2lbs per week. I adapted and evolved a healthy eating lifestyle that I am comfortable with for the rest of my LIFE. 2lbs is actually the official maximum rate of losing weight. I SAY 1.5lbs. Why, well, everything worked out fine for me, I had gained 10% muscle, become an ametuer athlete, everything but one thing happened that wasnt very welcome...I had a little lose skin at my waste. Thankfully, its not a lot and its gradually binding back to my abs and within a year it will be ok as long as I continue exercising and eating well. So if LOOSE SKIN frightens the fmuk out of you more than anything else, please adhere to my warning. Be patient.

Thats the basic and that got me off to a great start on my own jourmey. We all need mentors and guidance. I had 2 during my journey. I first read an E book by Tom Venutu educating me in much of what I have been preaching tbh. Second, in a few months I had already made great progress and lost about 10-15kg but I was constantly stuttering with my progress by this time, so I had hired a personal trainer (an investment of £120 every 6 weeks). I basically got him to give me 4 workout session in the first week. I then continue the program on my own for the next 5 weeks, then hire him again. Why I needed to keep hiring him? Because ourt body adapts to the routine, and needs to be challenged again to avoid plateua. This approximates to 4-6 weeks. I chose 6 weeks simply to keep the costs down slightly, lol.

If you have money to invest in Losing body fat, then hands down that money is best invested in a personbal trainor, not fad diets. My PT actually gave me a diet program to follow too. Perfect. A PT shows you how to maximise the efficiency of exercising. When you exercise, dont just ride an en exercise bike while reading a magazine, no point. The whole idea of exercising is to push your body to WORK, burn those calories. When using weights (and you must do resistance exercises to compliment the cardio), use low weights in the early stages of your fat loss journey, and HIGH reps.

Anyway, good stuff boys and girls. Sorry I am not posting much for the last few days anywhere on this forum has been so busy with the work I have inthe new year, so much to do, I might be a bit scarce for the next week or 2 but not completely! And I really want to know what you're all up to.

Keep each other motivated

Oh by the way, for those of you that have an Iphone or HTC Desire or any Android based smart phone, Runkeeper Pro is now free until end of January. Get it! And please join my team, so we can motivate each other. You can use it for just simply your walks. Then we can see you've done som many miles or kilometers of walks/runs and set goals for total miles in a week. Its great.

My Marathon training is going well, as a build up I've actually enter 3 other running events which are all half marathons but one of them is in Leith Hill which apparantly is one helluva challenge because of its very steep slopes. That I will be doing in March and the other 2 on February, one in Tunbridge Wells and one in...uh I forgot!

So please hook up with me on the runkeeper if you are a walker or runner, I dont like to be alone ;)

Brilliant advice and I too have never been a fan of fad diets; I've always just counted calories as not to eradicate any food groups. I will have to get exercising again as got out of it. Well done everyone else and Valda how can you still have Ferrero Rocher that takes some willpower. I don't have a posh phone only just got rid of my Nokia 3310 as it has broken!

On another note STILL WAITING FOR YOUR SPONSOR SHEET MRGLASS!!!

my problem is that I'm lazy and I can't cook. So for me Diet Chef is great for a month or two. It sets me off with a good start, getting used to small portions, and, even better I don't have to think about shopping apart from fruit and veg. After that I'll try to eat healthily and attempt cooking 8O

Hi Diane65 not only have a few Ferrer Rocher left, I've got loads of Peanut M7M's and chocolate covered peanuts and stuff squirreled around. Once I set my mind to it, I can leave the sweets alone vx

ps I'm totally into Wasabi Beans at the moment

Oh I'm so pathetic, I have to set that up, how can I have forgotten and you reminded me before too...I really need to get my task lisk straightened out. The list is overwhelmingly long at the moment, what it needs is prioritising and perhaps even stripping off the unessentials for now.

3310!!! Wow. I loved that phone but that was like 15 or so years ago! I admit Smartphones are too smart for their own good and simplicity is obviously not their strong point, especially touch screen. I do miss the old button pressing myself tbh.

Valda, its fine having those ferrer roche in storage because for 6 days you will eat healthy balanced nutritious meals and for 1 day of the week (poerhaps Saturday or Sunday) you can reward yourself with one or two of them ;) Wasabi Beans, hope you not eating too much, theyre 750 calories per 200g bag and a bit high in sugar. As a substitute, and part of your daily calorie budget, 3-4 times a week (not more or your body becomes desensitised to them), try half a handful of mixed walnuts, seeds (such as sesame), almonds and other nuts. All plain. There is enough juice in them particularly walnuts to give a nice flavour. Have them with a nice herbal tea (peppermint is my favourite). Yes, nuts have fat but its unsaturated fat, good fat, Omega 3 + 6. Lots of veg, eat all colours too to ensure you getting all essential minerals and vitamins.

In all honesty, I am as lazy as you can get, I know most of you wont believe me but its true. Just because I playing sports, exercising and eating as healthy as I can doesnt mean I'm not naturally lazy. The reason I do all those things is beacuse of one powerful element, goal setting and having a passion to want to achieve those goals. Set yourselves goals, constantly think of them, be passionate in achieving them and you'll see how easy it is to overcome laziness!

One other thing about goal setting, tell everyone what your goals are. Tell us here :) That way you gain the motivational encouragement from others and you also apply a little healthy pressure on yourself to get there ;)

While we were doing the Progress chart last year, allsinging had a great goal to walk 5km ijn a Race For Life charity event, so she had her goal set to lose as much body fat as possible at a healthy rate and ended up jogging all the way in the race rather than walked it. And we all know I had the Half Marathon as my ultimate goal last year. I think entering yourself in a runnning event for charity is brilliant for healthy goal setting and would strongly recommend such goal if you're struggling to find a good one.

You know I hated the idea of running at first, the idea of running aimlessly round and round again was just pointless and bloody boring. But as part of my fitness program to lose body fat, I started to really enjoy the solitariness of it. Sometimes I would run and my thoughts become so clear, ideas pop into my head, or my imagination just simply runs wild, like when Angelie Jolie was all ove...um, yeah but other times I just listen to my music, now I am pretty much addicted to running. What I'm saying is that, some of you may also hate the idea like I did but give it a chance and you'll realise its great benefits and the enjoyment of it.

I don't know what to do, We are having the Christmas Belated departmental lunch next week. I don't want to go, but I'll have to unless I have a day sick. I also don't see the point in going to a fancy restaurant but only having soup or stuff like that :(

Dont fear it Valda, its just a one off. Have fun with event and if you find out what is the restaurant in advance, you can plan what you order and choose the healthier option...or make it your comfort day of the week, just make sure you eat healthy for the rest of the week ;) You're doing so well because you're always conscious of what you eating now! You've resisted temptations and adding veggies to your meals, you walking more, yeah that's great progress! Make your walks more of a brisk walk as your next step. Lets know the restaurant, and we'll look at the menu on their website to see what options you can go for :)

General tips for eating out:

When waiting for your meals, ask for a salad side instead of eating the bread rolls and rubbish they tend to put on the table.

Avoid Deep Fried dishes.

Be very minimal with creamy sauces. You may think you are eating healthy with bowl of salad but you totally kill it with salad dressing sauces.

Opt for bolied rice rather than fried rice.

Choose low fat protein course, such as fish or chicken and ask the waiter to reduce the potatoes/rice/pasta with extra vegetables. Have a coffee or tea for desert. If you must have a desert, dont have any complex carbs, ie starchy stuff such as rice, pasta, potatoes in your main meal, then have about half of the desert. But still be sure your meal is fulfilling at the same time, as you dont want to starve either!

Best to be in control of what is served to you in the first place because I admit once its in front of you, its a little harder!

If your colleagues raise your eyebrows, educate them and laugh it out with them but stick to your guns. They'll soon have more respect when they see your drastic changes and outshine them :)

During the phase of losing body fat, cut down on complex carbs (not totally) but cut down on it.

some more good tips for eating out, order water or fruit juice instead of fizzy drinks or alcohol
IF what you want comes with a sauce, ask for it to be on the side, separate to your meal
and one that i always love, if you want something but it has lets say, cheese on it(i dont like too much cheese!) ask for it without :)
and if they say no, say your allergic, most restaurants should oblige since they cant ignore your special request
