Ah was reading about this! It sounds interesting, but was worried it might be a bit gimmicky, glad to hear it was better than that.superhero wrote:Went to see Sunday morning at the Centre of the World by Louis de Bernières at the Southwark Playhouse. It's been performed once as a radio play and you really couldn't imagine it ever being performed again, if it wasn't for this ingenious production.
If you like your plays unusual, this is definitely it. The play itself is quite bad, as there's no plot to follow, but thankfully it's only 1 hour long. However what's amazing about it is the sensory experience you get. Half the audience is blindfolded and have the experience the play through listening, smelling and touching. The other half can sit at the back and watch the action unfold. I wasn't blindfolded but that was just as interesting (you can definitely experience this play twice).
They use the most low-tech props imaginable, cups of coffee, smell of vinegar, chinese takeaway boxes, hand puppets or even just a board to generate the feeling of wind, but you can't help admire the effort the set designer put into the whole thing. In front of me was a reviewer who had his notepad ready and with a blindfold!
The play itself would get a 2/10, but the whole package is really interesting and gets an enthusiastic 7/10. I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for something unusual.

If you have a choice go to see 'Cause Celebre' a bit further into its run. The dress rehearsal felt as if they had not quite got the timing and the lighting right and that can be crucial ... it felt as if the play itself had a lot of potential ... I wouldn't mind seeing it again in a while

LOL....I thought it was very funny. It depends on the audience really, as it's heavily dependent on how the audience reacts to him.

I went to see it in December 2009, we had a good laugh but I'm amazed it's still going on. As superhero says, it depends very much on the audience.

Was anyone else able to book Sky Swan Lake this morning? I checked the booking website and saw that it was on the list but it seems to have disappeared?
