I read the book recently and I loved it. It made me laugh and it made me cry.

I'm also really hoping for previews otherwise I shall be using a voucher to see this.

Apparently there's an embargoed press screening for this tonight. They must want to minimise chatter about Hathaway's rubbish accent.

seeing Orange tweet about their new 'film to go' on itunes (posted in the freebies thread too http://filmtogo.orange.co.uk/) for My Blueberry Nights reminded me of Jude Law's absolutely awful manc accent in that, Anne's accent couldn't possibly be as bad as that.

In Anne's defence, there are some northerners who migrate south early in their life and develop a posh accent too, and then go on to spend their lives flipping betwen the two accents as Anne does in her role. We get a few lecturers like that, its odd hearing them flip between the two accents midspeech.

Conversely you get people born in the North who get cocooned by their parents in northern public schools and thus learn to speak with the Queens English (much like foreign students from say, Sweden, who develop American accents from being locked inside International Schools until they are 18). Then when they leave they get let loose on the big world, start to hate their false accent, renounce it and go local lingo - this is the more likely scenario with Annes character (since she went to Cambridge or Edinburgh University in the 1980s, when their admissions policy was far more biased than what it is today, so was much more likely to have been from a public school, learned posh and then gravitated to northern later).

However I am not sure what the case is in the film - it suggests the former, that shes from good Yorkshire stock and school and not some public school in the North.

As I understand it, her accent is supposed to be Yorkshire, but it sounds several miles west of Halifax in addition to the posh accent she elects to use. It sounds like she got it from watching Hollyoaks. So I agree, its still bloody awful. Jeez, why Anne Hathaway?

But my main problem with the movie is the plot incredulity - no way is a streetsmart Northern girl going to be attracted to useless idiot of a man, especially a Southern one. They are smart enough to pick decent men.

Having read the book (but not seen the film yet), I think that on paper Hathaway is an excellent casting choice for Emma.

I do wonder how well they will achieve the ageing over the 20 years.

The trailer clearly showed Dexter getting older but Emma didn't really seem to age (just changing haircuts).
