Re: The Angels' Share
i wasn't so sure about this. For a start I could have done with subtitles for the strong Glaswegian accents (I have a colleague from Glasgow but that was hardcore). I also found it was a bit uneven - the social realism versus the toffs talking about whisky, and then throwing in a bit of a heist in so they got their "Angels' Share". The story should have been tightened up somehow, as it was boring in parts. We had two walkouts and that was BEFORE the vomit landed in the whisky glass.

Re: The Angels' Share
I never knew Guardian screenings are so popular and don't you just love it when they tell you it's full and then someone zooms past you and say my friend is waiting upstairs and the person at the door doesn't check anything and just let them pass..funthing29 wrote:It was oversubscribed and some people got turned away. We also loved it (daughter didn't) but quite heart warming, humorous and sad at times. 8/10yogi wrote:I saw this tonight in Didsbury and thought it was excellent. Albert in particular was hilarious.
A perfect blend of grit and humour, Ken Loach really is on top form at the moment after the recent Looking for Eric.
Sorry to dash off before catching up with FMUK North, but OH was a bit under the weather.
Hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.
Hope your OH soon feels better and send her my best wishes.

Re: The Angels' Share
I too enjoyed it immensely. As everyone says humour, realism, all performed by mainly first time actors. Lots of laughs and the biggest gasp from the audience, I've ever heard.
Don't waste time analysing the plot just enjoy it 9/10

Much better than I thought it would be. Some recognisable actors. Gasps and laughs throughout the auditorium!
Amusing characters. My 2nd raw British/Scottish film of the week.
Trocadero Cineworld was our host, a rather packed compact Screen No.6 - for some reason the film was more 4:3 than 16:9. First time (surprisingly) I've joined a big'ish SFF queue for a while.

Re: The Angels' Share
I really loved it. Not my favorite Ken Loach film but I thought it was beautifully done. It just felt very human, nothing was black and white. The lead character was not instantly likable but I was rooting for him by the end.
The protagonist's struggle to have very 'normal' aspirations made it very endearing for me. If it was 'hollywood' they would have probably
successfully pulled of the heist, got £1 million + for the whiskey and then all drove off into the sunset to live semi-millionaire lifestyles.
But thankfully there was none of that and perhaps in some ways they didn't 'deserve' that as they were all very flawed characters. I don't know, so much you could discuss about the social commentary of films like this. It is grim but there is a lot of hope (or maybe only a little at times) pushing the story along. You just never know if that hope is going to materialise into something 'better' and that is what holds my attention with these kinds of films. Plus it is all done with a sprinkling of humour to smooth the intentionally rough and uncomfortable edges.
Would highly recommend. The accents were strong and there were some definite cringe-worthy moments but I found it very easy to watch the journey unfold. 8.5/10.

Re: The Angels' Share
I wonder why there there were so few screenings and locations for this, which seems set to be the biggest release of the week? Nearest to me were London or Brighton so just not practical, or I'd have gone like a shot.
Re: The Angels' Share
First of all, I would like to apologise profusely to whoever I bumped into at WIQ last night in the dark (top row!)
I arrived late
just at the start of the film, after finishing work late and rushing all the way across town.
I enjoyed the film, despite missing quite a few of the jokes. I still haven't cracked the glaswegian accent. I also had a friend from Glasgow when I first came to London, but she was softly spoken and much easier to understand than these roughnecks!
I suppose it's a bit of a departure from the usual Ken Loach film. I tought it was very well acted by turns moving, suspenseful and funny. 7/10
Rant: I lost my glasses case in the dark at WIQ. It's pink, did anybody that went there last night see it by any chance?

Re: The Angels' Share
LOL - top of the stairs? That would have been me, as someone did bump into me but I didn't recognize you in the dark! It was almost comical as soon as the lights went down as it was pitch dark and people were stumbling all over the place. We had a couple who decided to sit down on the stairs in front of us as they couldn't see anything but we pointed some seats out to them.cinefila1 wrote:First of all, I would like to apologise profusely to whoever I bumped into at WIQ last night in the dark (top row!)I arrived late

Re: The Angels' Share
So was it you Beate? So sorry. I just couldn't see a thing as my eyes had not adjusted well to the darkness. I naively thought those seats were empty! Lucky I put my bag/ hand out first, otherwise I would have sat down on you!Beate wrote:LOL - top of the stairs?
