Re: Silver Linings Playbook
I didn't think much of David O. Russell's I ♥ Huckabees nor did I care much for Flirting with Disaster, but I loved Three Kings and thought The Fighter was just utterly, utterly brilliant.
Much like The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook contains a plethora of thoroughly uncouth oddballs all of whom you're expected to empathise with by the end...and my word, did I ever.
I have to be honest - when I heard that the movie was about a former mental institution inhabitant, I immediately had a flashback to It's Kind of a Funny Story which I didn't really like. Thank God this went a different route. Hackneyed? Yes. Soppy? Yes. But believable? Yes, yes, absolutely yes!! Admittedly, the entire last act felt a bit too mainstream given the art-house atmosphere generated by the first two thirds, but I went with it and still had a blast.
In short, I loved this movie! More than Russell's flawless direction, I adored Bradley Cooper and flat out LOVED Jennifer Lawrence.
Sheer perfection on all of their parts, intelligently written and easily one of my favourite flicks of the year.
Not to be missed.
PS. Worth watching just to see Chris Tucker NOT playing a jive-talking sidekick.

Did anyone notice the BBFC certificate for Ginger and Rosa before the movie?

I'd imagine playbook is referring to the "strategy" the psychiatrist was talking about when Pat is stressed out, etc.don_datta wrote:Playbook is an American Football term.Beate wrote:what does the title mean? I get the silver linings but what about the playbook?
Me too, except I vaguely remember that season few years ago when this is set, so I knew the outcome of that last Eagles-Cowboys game...don_datta wrote:Great performances all round and as an American Football fan (not the Eagles), loved that whole side of the story too.
Btw, for non-NFL fans, the player they mention (DeSean Jackson) and the infamous 1-yard play, called the "dumbest ever"... Here it is, always good to see it again!

OMG...serious overbooking & why the hell did they staff let so many latecomers in & then let them faffed around so much. I wanted to take my shoes off & chuck it at the 2 imbeciles who were constantly checking their phone in the front.fetta wrote:I know, it seemed as if there were more mentally unstable people at the screening then on the screen and the seats were vibrating (2nd row). Then the chatting, swapping seats midway through the film (WTF?), checking mobile phones, etc. Unbelievable. I liked the film quite a lot, but will have to watch again at some point to enjoy fully.
The film definitely had funny moments and great acting but I felt a little conscious laughing at the clinically diagnosed disturbed even if the undiagnosed seemed crazier at times. 7/10
I loved the movie, I thought the scrip was well executed. BC was fab as always.
BTW Did you see the chap who tripped up on the stairs...not once but twice

And me! Did NOT want to see that again! Luckily the film was the right one but ZoeBanfield was already out of her seat to alert an usher.Jayman wrote:Did anyone notice the BBFC certificate for Ginger and Rosa before the movie?

Omg. The girls in front row were the worst. We were sitting accord from them and at one stage one asked for the lady who had been there a while to speak to doorman about something. She left her shopping on seat so she could get back. And after about 10 mins (no return) the lady removed her stuff and called her friend over to sit there. She immediately came back and the new lady tried to refuse to leave. Omg.
Our seats were also vibrating too. It was well annoying.at first we thought it was people behind us kicking the seats. Don't know why they were tho. No train or anything there??!
Anyway on with the film.
It was quite enjoyable. Nice for a film to try and capture a different side of life (mental illness) and loved the predictable ending. 7/10 from me.
Love Bradley cooper

Islington was very full too. My oh and I ended up sitting in the first row. 5 minutes before the film was due to start, one of the ushers went around counting the number of empty seats.
Even sitting so close to the screen, I really enjoyed the film despite the predictable ending. I was really glad to hear references to Metallica and Megadeth.
