Re: Precious
Mariah to land Precious Oscar?
Mariah Carey has done her Oscar chances no harm after she won a Breakthrough Performance award.
The actress has been tipped for Oscar glory for her role in gritty drama Precious. The singing superstar wore no make -up and wears dowdy clothes in her role as a social worker.
It has been announced that she will be honoured at the Palm Springs International Film Festival next January. She will be giving the Breakthrough Performance Award trophy.
Previous recipients include Oscar winners Jennifer Hudson and Marion Cotillard.

Re: Precious
I watched this last night. This was a very sad movie focussed on mental and physical abuse from parents...
It was really hard to get into in the first five minutes (yes I am THAT impatient!) but soon kicks off with her storyline.
The films based on Precious and she pretty much talks throughout the film. As the summary says, she's abused by her father and has two children with him whilst her mother physically abuses her as a result of this. She deals with life by imagining a different world then what she is actually experiencing and having dreams of how she wishes she could be. She ends up leaving home after a fight with her mother who dropped her little baby and carries on educating herself. However, she finds out she is HIV Positive (thanks to her Dad). She has to deal with life lonely and feeling unloved and unappreciated. She tries counselling with the social worker where she finds out why she was abused. She cuts ties with her family and moves on with both her children. I assume she carries on with her education.
I thought the storyline itself was really good but very very depressing. I guess that's because I've worked with young people like her before so have had the unfortunate experience of seeing such situations happen and how it affects children. In this film, you need the classical happy ending where she gets away from her horrid life and actually moves on. It was good to see that happen but still somewhat unhappy as she is HIV Positive. I'm suprised it didn't show her commit suicide or something, it really was not nice what she suffered. I've not read the book it's based on so have no idea whether it goes well against the book or not. It does really scoop out the happiness in you.
I found some parts abit hard to understand. The characters had really really strong ghetto accents (abit like my NY cousins) so I had to replay it a few times to try make out what they were actually saying.
I knew Mariah Carey was in the film but having not read anything about it, I didn't realise she was the social worker!!! My goodness, she looked entirely different - didn't even realise it was her until I read andrews post about her being the social worker! I must say Mariah's role was pretty good and I liked the way she questioned Precious' Mum. She probably did an even better role since I didn't recognise her. In terms of the storyline, at least it allowed Precious to find out what really went on so she got the closure she needed. I also thought the teacher who taught Precious did an amazing role and it was good Precious had someone like her in her life.
I did think it was abit long at times. Some bits could have been cut out personally but that maybe because I don't like very long movies either. I would recommend this film ONLY if you would be okay with child abuse stories, some bits are actually quite horrifying (well for me anyway). It leaves appreciating what you do have in life and lucky you are not one of those children out there who actually do experience what the storyline shows. Generally a good storyline, well portrayed and good acting in most areas so 7/10 from me. It's not something I would want to watch in the cinema though but a good watch nevertheless.

There's a screener copy up for download if you want to watch it now... It's pretty good copy. I didn't think she would be that good either. I didn't even recognise her!
