Watched this the other night after seeing the sequel and realizing I didn't remember a thing that happened in the first one.
Still need to read the books but quite enjoyed it regardless.

Watching it now, going to read the book tonight ;D can guarantee ill read the first and second before wednesday ha!

The books are AMAZING! Be sure to read the Heroes of Olympus series when you finishing with the Percy Jackson one, as that one continues the story (alternating books between Camp Half-Blood and another place).

I still haven't got round to watching this yet, will it mean I won't be able to understand or follow the next film?

I'd say yes and no. I had seen the first one, but totally forgot what happened, and was still able to follow it alright, but it really goes into a lot of stuff from the first, so I'd recommend seeing it first if possible.
