Yes it was a very dysfunctional family with an abusive alcoholic father and a mother who was more immersed in her art than her children. The acting was very good so I was totally absorbed in the film but one does wonder how they managed to keep their children out of care. The film just shows how resilient the human spirit can be. Will be interesting to read the book and see how it compares with the film. 7/10
