Overall I think I preferred the other Churchill movie, what was it called The Hollywood Years?

But all of them have the same problem, they're about this flawed old guy and there's no sign of a cute funny dog. They're presented like you're supposed to know who he is so it's less of a story and more of a highlight reel.

You would think one of them would have taken the approach of - look, here's baby Churchill. These events shaped his life and made him really good at speeches and being underground and who's this, it's only his loveable best pal in the whole world, beaches the baby bulldog.

Gary Oldman gives a fine performance but I'm not sure why it won him an Oscar. It's like he gets extra actor points because he wore a lot of makeup. If it was Ant or Dec or Judi Dench under there then fair enough but it's just an accomplished actor doing his job in a heavy costume that looks like somebody else?

Events and awards leading up to the Oscars point to who will win, like the winner of the DGA award also winning the best director Oscar 61 times in the last 68 years. And Oldman is an even bigger favourite than him so I felt it safe to make the point early.

I agree the film portrayed Churchill to be a heavy drinker, bad tempered, and eccentric. He certainly did not come over as the great hero he has been portrayed by so many. A great performance by Gary Oldman, but felt the film was let down by too much narrative and not enough happening. My partner was so bored she fell asleep for most of the film.
