I saw this hilarious comedy on Thursday night at Silverlink (my least favourite venue, but beggars can’t be choosers).
I had set out with fairly low expectations of the film – I don’t feel that comedy crosses the Atlantic too well – in either direction, and for the original film to be French – well – enough said.
The two leads – Carell and Rudd had an excellent on-screen chemistry and seem to work well together. I feel that Steve Carell put in an award-winning performance as Barry, a weirdo who likes to build dead mouse dioramas. With a look, a word, or playing dead, Barry provides the wit, and the farce that the rest of the film lacked. Carell is so special that we can ignore the shortcomings of the rest of the film, and enjoy how brilliant this ‘idiot’ is.
Paul Rudd gave his usual performance, but there is a tendency for him to play the same type of role, which was less interesting than many others on screen.
The film features a wide range of characters in the cast: Zack Galifianakis (The Hangover), as the extremely confident yet diminutive boss who stole Barry’s wife, Jermaine Clement as a shady sleazy artist, and David Walliams (orange tan job - dreadful) as an eccentric millionaire.
I am delighted to report that there was no puerile toilet humour, which has become much too common in modern American comedies. It made a refreshing change to see a mainstream comedy which does not rely on this type of humour.
I laughed heartily at several scenes, and recommend that you all try to catch this one.
9/10 from me.
