When it's busy it's the fifth circle of hell. I used to walk/take a bus from Bank to Moorgate in the morning when our office were still situated there as it was quicker than taking the Northern Line.

The Northern Line is my line - I use it regularly. It is no worst or no better than any other line which I also use regularly. That is why if I have time, I use the bus, it is also cheaper, and I get a seat and I can see the world instead of black tunnels, always standing and squashed like sardines, always under someone's smelly armpits, with no room to breathe. There is no non-peak time, it is peak all the time. My advice, avoid tubes, if you can! ;)

I use the Northern line every day. Yes it is insanely busy during rush hour with commuters and crowded at the weekend with tourists but so are all the other lines as well. You have such wonderful journeys to look foward to chelle1973. ;)

I use it every day too and while extremely busy (you have to get used to letting a few tubes pass by before you get on), you'll get used to it ;)

I've been to london a few times just short stays though, but i have some experience of the tubes, the first time ever in london I lost my mum! After letting a few tubes go by until i got fed up waiting and was adamant that the next one we'd be getting on, no matter how busy....and well me and my kids managed to get on but as my mum stepped on the door started closing! So she jumped back onto the platform! We eventually found her!! Might stick to buses this time round LOL.

The tubes are not quite that bad, unless you are traveling from say Leicester Square to Covent Garden which is VERY touristy but unnecessary anyway as it's just a few minutes of walking apart ;)

I take back what I said before ;) I used the Metropolitan line on Wednesday and they had the new trains, so spacious and smooth and quiet, like the overground ones, no carriages, just one long train, and non-peak, there was hardly anyone around! Also as if by magic this morning as I was trying to get to work, the Northern Line train arrived, and the train was empty (normally, they are so packed, I have to let several go, as c_t has mentioned) and we all piled on and all got a seat! Someone must be reading this thread! Miracles does happen. :D

Yes, I noticed these days, they do not give you time to get on! As soon as the last person steps off, before anyone gets a chance to get on, they are saying on the loudspeaker, the train is ready to leave now! :wall: I see a lot of people being separated. The thing is to decide beforehand what to do if separated, i.e. get off at the next stop to wait for them if it is a long tube journey and you want to travel together, or just meet at the destination station, etc. ;)
