stuartboy wrote:Speechless! That was awesome. What a powerful film. A real slow-burner but then explosive amounts of violence. Have just come out from seeing it and to say that I feel strange is an understatement. Wasn't sure whether I wanted to cry or be sick. Realised it was because I had been so engrossed in the movie that the jump back to reality was taking longer than usual - quiet sunny Sunday streets.
Has to be one of the best movies this year for me. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea though.
Brilliant!
Great cinematography. Great soundtrack. Amazing realism.
Easy 10/10.
Most of the music really bugged me, felt cheap n nasty.
Methinks someone needed anger management classes lol
Powerful film.

I looked away for a certain part but the rest I could handle. Now I know what to expect, I'll go again and see it. tBH I didn't think there wasn't that much violence. I wonder how Hopeprince is coping with the Ryan Gosling double this morning?
preferred locations Shepherds Bush, Westfield, Notting Hill, Central London, Wimbledon, Islington, Wandsworth thanks

I think the violence was more psychological than graphic actually.
I am surprised people found it slow/slow burning; for me it was the perfect pace... my life is not much faster than that (is yours faster, really?) and I appreciate silence very much in the real life, so none of the silence bugged me!
My mood is getting lighter

Didn't really enjoy this film. It was too slow for me and the violence (although not too much) seemed unnecessarily extreme to bring the rating up to 18.

Highly emotive film.
Ryan Gosling was mesmerising.
Cary Mulligan was underused.
The violence was strong and unnecessary in part, I felt. It would have been just as forceful and effective to show the aftermath without showing the whole event?
Anyway, this was one of the films of the year for me so far.

Thought this was excellent.
Ryan Gosling plays the strong silent lead very well, a throwback to the kind of roles Steve McQueen might have played in his youth. Carey Mulligan didn't have much to do apart from look wistful but made the best of it. Strong support as well from Albert Brooks and Bryan Cranston.
Loved the soundtrack as well. Had an eighties pop feel to it which felt strange when paired with a seventies type pulp thriller but it really worked.
Seen a great run of films in the past week (Warrior, Tinker and CSL)and this proved no exception.
One of the films of the year. 9/10

Totally blown away by this. Just about perfection. 10/10 easily.
102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

I don't know what is it about this movie, as I did not think the acting nor the directing individually were spectacular... but put them together and it's terrific!
It just ruined my weekend though, my stupid fat grin has gone and my mood is somewhere between dark grey and pitch black.
Definitely the best movie in a long time for me; 9.5/10
(Should have been 10, but people chuckling and gasping @Clapham PH really bothered me, and i hated the foul-breathed guy seating behind me!)
My ex was wondering why people were laughing. I think it's just such an incredibly tense ride from start to finish that some were just laughing as some kind of release. Still, it was f**king annoying.

WOW...that was quite a ride of a movie - started relatively laid back and built to one heck of an energy rush - really enjoyed it.
There really does seem to be more violence creeping into films these days - been a while since I saw one rated 18 in the cinema (and for good reason I guess).
also, Ryan gosling just continues to impress me - Blue Valentine, Crazy, Stupid Love, now this......really enjoying watching this man perform
9/10 from me
