Saw this on Friday and OK, it wasn't my preference (so maybe it didn't stand much chance, given that I was looking forward to BEMH?) but I was distinctly unimpressed. I'd never seen Daniel Radcliffe in anything before but was surprised by his accent - is that how he normally speaks? I was appalled by the unrealistic dialogue: towards the end, his character, Kipps, actually says to the nanny something like "Would you fetch us some train tickets?" whereas he would surely have used a word like "p*rchase" and I'm sure I also heard him say "I'm gonna" do something or other - so anachronistic. What is the point of making a costume drama, and presumably spending a fortune on dress and special effects, if the characters don't then speak in the appropriate language? That said, it was nice to see Ciaran Hinds and Janet McTeer. 7/10 at a pinch! And thank goodness for the angry older man who issued a three-line whip to the hordes of noisy teenagers and shut them up at a stroke.

I went to see this today i had some vouchers ready to expire so i took my friend, we were the only 2 in a ridiculously sized screening room lol I really enjoyed this one it was much more back to basic ghost story and i thought it was done very well, yes the jumps are a little cliche if you like but tbh a ghost story is a ghost story there are not too many ways of telling them and maybe one day we will get an original way of putting them together but even if we do there certainly wont be a new original way every week ;) one of the downsides of so many movies being produced is that originality is often lost only once in a blue moon will we see something on screen that will surprise us and when we do it will be re-done a thousand times over ;)

We really enjoyed it, the tension, suspense and jumps were all in the right places at the right times very glad i used the vouchers for this one, as for Daniel Radcliff it took me about 10 minutes to shake of the Harry Potter thing but once i did i enjoyed his performance i reckon a few more films and we will all be giving it Harry Who!! lol

Avery respectable 8/10 from me :D

really not scary, apart from one scene that I didnt see coming plus the corridor scene of course. Other than that, the 'scary bits' were simply too over the top, eg. often the woman looked like a dummy on a rail. Seeing kids kill themselves is obviously very disturbing though.

Daniel Radcliffe was a bad choice of lead in the sense that he still cant act, but in a way his Potter persona of tramping round old english villages and castles lent some gravitas to the film, particularly the ending, which echoed the location of Potters last ever scene. Almost 'what really happened to Harry Potter', a Shutter Island-sque ending where we learn Harry is an escaped mental fantasist lol? Well that actually didnt happen so thats not a spoiler, but theres potential there, you have to admit.

Fortunately Radcliffe had absolutely stellar support all round. The older actors must surely be scratching their heads wondering why they are getting pa*d less for acting brilliantly when this bad hobbit, who still looks like he has just been wanking way too much every time he is on screen, gets all the money.

Sets were sumptously forboding fortunately, particularly the Cornish island and the building itself which hoists the score up to 7/10.

I'm going to be generous and give this a 5/10. Having had the privilege of both reading the book AND seeing the stage play beforehand, I can confidently say this is inferior to both. We barely see the woman in black in this film adaptation which is incredibly disappointing - in both the novel and the play she is very dark and very brooding - it's a shame she only shows up for brief shock moments. Supporting cast was pretty good, Radcliffe wasn't, although he does very well in keeping his mouth shut. Script was also quite shallow. Not impressed.

I'll post my review soon enough.

I saw this on Thursday as I had time to waste at Islington before John Carter. I had vouchers and it was just the right length.

I have to admit I jumped quite a few times and it was really spooky but after a while you get immune to it and when the jumpy bit comes along, it means nothing. I even went out to the loo and to text PCX about 10 mins before the end 8O . Good try from Daniel Radcliffe but he's miscast dreadfully. he's far too young to be a widowed father and can't act well enough to carry this film. He's really better off doing smaller roles, in ensemble type films to learn his craft.
6/10
preferred locations Shepherds Bush, Westfield, Notting Hill, Central London, Wimbledon, Islington, Wandsworth thanks
