Premiere and Q & A

Short version of review which I will extend on tomorrow!
Film was Ok. Seen worse this year but definitely seen better. Lost it's way in the middle . . . very slow. Good ending!
May watch again . . . though not tomorrow!

Note to Stuartboy, Showcase in Paisley does not have screens positioned at the same height as Showcase East in Glasgow.

Got tom the showcase in nant garw just as they were letting people in. Forgot about the phone/camera thing and was bristling with video cameras from work. Having said that there were no problems in handing them in. Yes the plot was fast/slow/fast/slow wondered around a little and got back on task.
Took me back to the films of Douglas Fairbanks jnr. & Errol Flynn. I really liked the film, I would love to escape and swash my buckle.

I did start to raise the 3D glasses at times just to see what it was like. As the 3D was not continual there were parts were you could watch normally. The film was brighter and a bit clearer in the non 3D parts. And that's the problem with 3D, the fact that motion can be blurred.

Well I went to the O2 screening this morning and looked out for everyone from fmuk and didnt find anyone. I later learned they were all in the balcony. I dont really like the balcony, its just not my ideal viewing angle looking down at the screen. Great to meet with Weirdfilms and PXC+OH after the film, with weirdfilms easily spotting me sitting as usual watching the credits roll to the end while the rest of the audience disappeared to queue up for their phones.

8/10 for the movie. In short I had a blast with it. Has the energy and vibe of Flash Gordon, and story elements mixed from Planet of the Apes, Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja, Star Wars and Superman, yeah Superman, it kind of rocked that this was a sort of superhero movie too. There was even a western in the mix at the beginning. So quite a few fun surprise elements for me. Love the monster dog, stole the show. The effects were very super, nothing original but just done well at a large scale. The cinematography was also super, and surprisingly so given how dead and deserted Mars is. Oh and this was probably the 2nd best live action 3D, second to Hugo. Considering this is post converted, I'm shocked at how good the result is. Although again, dark sequences do not bode well, so I will still prefer to watch this in 2D and I will do so again when its released.

I did like this. The effects were pretty damn good and despite some inherently flat 3D (either down to my eyesight, which is actually pretty good, or simple dismissive attitude) the film was great to look at. But my goodness me, the script was poor - while I admit to not having read the original pulp novels, I was pretty confused throughout the film as it seemed to be going in several different directions at once. Still, you can't deny the ambition of the thing, and it's still a solid adventure film.

Interesting how John Carter is quite similar to Avatar. I don't have to go over everything for someone to work that out.

Sorry for the rubbish review but it is 1 in the morning. 7/10

Actually its the other way around, this is a good adaptation of a 19th century Edgar Rice Burrows book. Its one of the first true sci-fi stories and I really liked it. All those other movies which you said this movie borrowed from, actually were inspired by the ERB books.

I actually wrote a full review on imdb saying the same thing. I know those films and most scifi draw inspiritation from the books itself. But not having read them its clearer to see what those inspirations were.
