Re: The Diary Room
Hi all,
I was hoping that someone may be able to offer some advice about this since I've never had to deal with this sort of thing!
After quite a few years of nothing more than a scale and polish done at the dentist, in January, I had a filling put in. After a few weeks, the filling was still painful and so, I returned to the dentist who then removed the filling and advised an infection had set in behind it and put in a temporary filling.
I returned a month later and received root canal treatment and another temporary filling inserted.
Although less painful, there was still a degree of pain and tenderness and when I attended at the dentist again today, I was told that it may still be infected and they couldn't put a crown in today on that basis. I've been given a silver amalgam filling and a course of antibiotics in the meantime and I've to return in three months. If the pain hasn't subsided, I've been told I will be referred to a specialist.
This specialist will apparently cost £500! I asked about simply having the tooth removed and the dentist told me that in that case, if I elected to have a tooth removed, any implant replacement would cost me £2k!
These figures shocked me since I have pa*d for all the dental treatment to date and seem to be shelling out for a problem not of my making.
Does this sound reasonable? Any and all comments would be greatly appreciated.

Re: The Diary Room
Very sorry to heat about all your trouble and pain, John. It does seem as though something is amiss. If the tooth is extracted, I recommend the implant, but it is expensive! Can you go to the Citizen's Advice Bureau?
Re: The Diary Room
Be careful of complication of dental implants. You may want to look up an article in the Telegraph last week, or the week before, headlined 'Time bomb in dental implants' before proceeding.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: The Diary Room
Are you private or NHS, John Milton? The specialist fee sounds steep! In your shoes, I would ask for a second opinion.
I know there are a couple of dentists who hang out on the MSE health boards, so it may be worth posting there for some advice too.

The pony's at this place http://www.miniatureponycentre.com/ are not much bigger than gnomes, well worth a look, especially if you have children with you.
Preferred Cinema's now Paignton or Exeter!

That is so funny plus it is a life experience that I imagine few if any of us on this site have ever had so that in itself is unique. Just out of curiosity did you sport one of those fetching hats?andrews wrote:I am in Devon. Today we visited http://www.gnomereserve.co.uk. No, I really did. God knows why!

Re: The Diary Room
As today is the 100th Anniversary of the Declaration of War, there have been various services throughout UK and Europe.
Tonight everyone is asked to join in the Lights Out Initiative where only one light is lit in our homes between 10 & 11pm. A candle is suggested but please be careful!
If you have any safety concerns, just keep one lamp lit. This Lights Out Initiative is led by the Royal British Legion.
I am going out to a reflection at the Cenotaph in the town at 9pm and then on to an ecumenical service in the Cathedral where the single light will be extinguished at 11pm.
