Re: What Did You Watch Last Night?
I watched an episode of The X-Files called "Syzygy". Wanted to make a post on it because of how hilarious I thought it was. Scully got so pissed off with Mulder in this episode she smoked a rare cigarette in her Motel room and the look on her face was just classic. Here's hoping there's more episodes like these in the future.

Re: What Did You Watch Last Night?
I watched this last night and found it a gripping, informative, but also quite a depressing experience.Celini wrote:I watched Inside Job again (thanks to BBC iplayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... nside_Job/ ), and I was blown away again!
I am very thick when it comes to understanding financial matters (as I am really not interested in this stuff) but this documentary is just amazing!
It introduces all the players, the strategies, the hidden agendas in a very comprehensive way (even I can understand everything! That says a lot, trust me)
It actually made me think about this debate we had around Machine Gun Preacher when some people were saying this (pile of shit of a) movie acted as an eye opener about the situation in East Africa... well people,if you really want proper information, watch a proper documentary!
The amount of self interest at the expense of everyone else from bankers, academics and government officials meant everyone seemed to be either living in denial or have their heads deep in the sand all for a quick buck.
And then the saviour Obama rides into town and hires all the same people, so nothing is ever gonna change.
Great film though.

Re: What Did You Watch Last Night?
Watched Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus. I love Terry Gilliam films but it took me a while to get round to seeing this Blu Ray as I had plain forgotten about it.
This is vintage Gilliam at his near best. Once again we get a visual contrast between harsh reality and the whimsical imagination of his protagonist done with plenty of cynical humour. The effects of the imagination sequences are done with old school model work combined with CGI but still retains the surreal trademark vision of Gilliam's 80s films..
Heath was great and its such a delight to see the legendary Christopher Plummer playing a large role of the title character. What is pleasantly surprising is how well the story adopts the 3 voluntary actors filling out Heath's un-filmed parts (Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrel). Very cleverly done and even enhances the movie as each actor accentuates a different aspect of Heath's real world persona, hence be seen with a slightly different look appropriate to the given persona in each imagination sequence. Johnny Depp and Colin Farrel were enjoyable while Jude Law was ok but he wasnt really given enough screen time to do much.
The story doesnt make total sense at first, none of his films do. Its not for everyone but definitely Gilliam fans should not miss this. Dont know why it took me so long.
Oh there was a fascinating short extra on the Blu Ray showing Heath donning several costumes in front of the camera, trying out different interpretations of the characters that would eventually be acted out by Depp. It was fascinating, you can see what a craftsman Heath was turning out to be from this one extract behind the scenes. There is also a nice short doc telling the story of the films survival after Heath's passing.
8/10
I also watched RED, a couple nights ago but forgot to mention it. Very enjoyable OTT spy nonsense but its still an immense joy to watch this cast of pensioners playing ex spy agents kicking ass. Willis still cuts it as a cool sardonic action hero. Malkovich is funny as a paranoid techie. And how the hell does Helen Mirren maintain her youthful voluptuous demeanour? While Karl Urban represents the newer generation with his brand of coolness. There's not to much to analyse with this film, its just a whole lot of fun.

Re: What Did You Watch Last Night?
I was subjected to the tortuousness of the x factor as daughter had a friend over. I missed out on some good offerings in the form of Vicky Christina Barcelona and the Cable guy.
wierdfilm: loved the x files, do they still make them?

The only recent thing was an apparently not-very-good film in 2008. They cancelled the show back in 2002.annabrett wrote:I was subjected to the tortuousness of the x factor as daughter had a friend over. I missed out on some good offerings in the form of Vicky Christina Barcelona and the Cable guy.

Re: What Did You Watch Last Night?
There were 2 films. I actually quite enjoyed both films. i suggest you watch them too after you finished the series. You sure are tearing through those X files episodes! Lower your expectations though with the story arcs towards the final few seasons but enjoy each episode as they are. Unfortunately when a series is too successful, it falls into the trap of living too long. I wish its success was moderate and could have got a proper conclusion at abour season 7 or 8.weirdfilms33 wrote:The only recent thing was an apparently not-very-good film in 2008. Watched Melancholia last night.
I think I liked it. It certainly had a lasting effect on me; I still feel slightly melancholic myself when thinking about it.

I'd second a season 8 ending. I'm working through season 7 now and theres a sense that things are just starting to wrap up and almost keel over under the weight of its convoluted mythology. I mean, episodes are still great but events are getting a little too grandiose for their own health, and how can you top that? I cant imagine where it will go when Doggett and Reyes take over.
If Mulder had stayed with the show properly to the end it might have worked better - he had become such an overwhelmingly interesting character way more than the wisecracking monotone fanatic of early on.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?
