Re: John Carter
Met a friend down in Brighton and saw it on the cineworld's tiny screen, with London-like security still.
I feared I'd have to sell my IMAX ticket for Friday after this.
I liked it a lot.
Well done, funny, beautiful to look at, and well crafted all over. Mars felt alive.
8/10

Re: John Carter
I watched this at West India Quay and was very unhappy about having to leave my phone with them. I asked what happened if the phone went missing but they said it would not go missing as they would put it in a box that would be with them all the time. That did not answer my query as to what would happen if it went missing. I would like to know the legal aspects as all I get is a sticker with a number and humans are humans and make mistakes so it could happen that they could give a phone to the wrong person, etc... We do not sign a contract or anything so I would like to know what would happen if something happened to my phone. They were also asking us to hand in ipads, tablets, etc... Imagine having to leave with them an Iphone and an Ipad getting only a sticker in return with no guarantees of anything, I mean, you are leaving with them over £1000!!!!
When we got in, the same problem others mentioned about the screening. I thought my glasses were faulty, then they fixed that.
About the film, I did find myself yawning a few times as the story was a bit boring for me at times (maybe I was just too tired to fully concentrate) and I found the film too long. However, I must say it was a truly amazing visual experience. I loved the graphics, the sets, the 3D and the whole special effects experience (apart from the gross scene with John Carter coming out of the white ape) . There were also a couple of funny bits like the language barrier between John Carter and the alien. So in my opinion the story was not so great but the visual experience was truly enjoyable.

Re: John Carter
I believe we received warnings about the no phone/camera/tablet policy beforehand... if you were not happy with that you could have decided not to get in (and not to risk losing your £1000
) and chose to p*y for £12 tickets instead!

Re: John Carter
I don't see the problem, just leave your expensive equipment at home if you don't want to hand it in. We knew from the Sky screenings yesterday that it happened there. I've always got my phone back promptly and in good order.secret_agent wrote:I watched this at West India Quay and was very unhappy about having to leave my phone with them. £1000, really? What would you be doing with an iPad a Sunday morning when you go to the cinema :/
My phone costs £12... they can lose it and give me some popcorn and a drink as compensation, I'll be fine
Plus it's not that big of a deal, if they take your stuff, it means they're 1) allowed to do it and 2) competent enough not to lose or break anything. It's just a question of trust!

I actually saw a kid who had managed to sneak in with his iPad before the film, playing angry birds!Octopus wrote:£1000, really? What would you be doing with an iPad a Sunday morning when you go to the cinema :/
How he got in is beyond my understanding

Re: John Carter
I didn't really know what to expect with this film. On paper it looks like my idea of a nightmare but I was pleasantly surprised. I liked it. I thought the 3d was good, although not really in your face. Some of the story didn't quite make sense to me, but once I decided not to over think it I was happy to go along for the ride. I also liked Taylor Kitsch in the lead role. I'm currently watching Friday Night Lights again so I feel like I'm seeing a lot of him! Film was a bit long but I'd give it 7.5/10, really liked the ending!
No issue with the phones, in fact it was quite easy. Secret_agent did you get the warning email about the tight security? I understand why people may be uneasy leaving phones and other expensive electronic equipment with security but to be fair they did give us notice about this so people could decide if they would rather leave these items at home. I thought it was going to be a bit of a nightmare but it was all handled quite efficiently.

Re: John Carter
I was a little apprehensive, I had my iPod, iPhone, netbook and kindle in a bag that had to be handed in, along with my life in a usb, but yet to have a security c*ck-up.

You should really read your emails and/or keep an eye on the film thread, as this was posted before:secret_agent wrote:I watched this at West India Quay and was very unhappy about having to leave my phone with them
don_datta wrote:Please note that we have just been informed today by Disney that due to the high sensitivity of John Carter 3D, and the fact that we are inviting customers to see it before it even releases in the US, Disney will be operating very high security at these screenings.
Under strict instruction from the film studio, ALL MOBILE PHONES AND OTHER RECORDING DEVICES WILL HAVE BE HANDED IN TO SECURITY AND CAN BE COLLECTED FROM SECURITY AFTER THE SCREENING. Please understand that this is without exception and customers carrying a recording device of any kind (including without limitation cameras, mobile phones, laptops, iPads, other tables etc.) will not be allowed into the auditorium unless that device is handed over to security on entry.
Please leave your mobile phone and other devices at home if you do not want to part with them.
