Just saw this for the second time at a full (small) screen in Kingston. Apart from the woman next but one to me who kept checking her phone and Oooed and Awwed all the time you could have heard a pin drop, all the audience were completely absorbed, including a few children.

Loved it just as much this time.

I also loved the fashion of that period, everyone looked so elegant, and the men looked really dapper.

I have now included Odeon Surrey Quays in my list of cinemas I can make, if there is no other option available. Still prefer Cineworld Greenwich. People whose preview there was cancelled should make the point that they also lost out on free popcorn as that deal is only on at the O2 Greenwich.

The story was charming, some brilliant touches in the script. e.g. George's nightmare great acting (including the dog) and entertaining music. Also visually the film is very nice - a crisp black and white with excellent lighting, a joy to watch, especially compared to the cinematography of some films in colour these days. All in all a shame the film isn't 20-30 minutes shorter, then it could have been a VERY VERY good film (if I was the producer I would still edit it down - but that might be a problem as the director seems to be one of the editors). One gets the message that George is on a downward spiral quite early on so doesn't need such a long development.

The plot did remind me of Singing in the Rain but it is such a long time ago I last saw it that I am not sure if I mix up anything.

The Odeon Holloway was quieter than last time (a smaller screen, though), yet there was a woman not far from us who unwrapped one noisy sweet after the other for the duration of most of the film and then put each of the wrappers in a also very noisy plastic rubbish bag. I felt silly to complain as it was a silent film and I didn't miss any dialogue but it still did disturb the mood.

The seats were not terribly comfortable and after about an hour my back was getting quite sore. Next time I will have to go even earlier and try to get one of the VIP seats and see if they are any better.

Also, the heating was on full blast and when we first got there the cinema felt like a sauna. Having read of your experiences at the Margin Call screening last week we complained immediately before the film started and - we were the 3rd to complain we were told - they fixed it fairly quickly.

They were also quite good with late-comers. One of the ushers came in just before the film started to check where the (few) empty seats were and later escorted late-comers directly there without a lot of disruption for the other people.

Kim Novak was on the radio just now complaining about the use of Bernard Herrmann's Vertigo music in this. She sounded very angry indeed.
