My 2014 Unlimited Films: 11/100
Re: John Carter
I got the aforementioned email warning so chose to leave my (not remotely) valuable phone in the car, but I was rather amused to see the same warning of the high security etc. being posted on the SFF feedback email which was only sent during the film. Not much point in that really, Lukey-boy!

Re: John Carter
Hi All,
I managed to see this yesterday at the O2 and was given sufficient warning about the embargo on phones. It was actually quite nice not to have a phone for a few hours and reminded me of days past........ when there were no mobile phones. Yes, the golden age.
Just want to say thank you to Tilly for the kind offer of tickets which I did not need to use.
As for the film. I have to say that I was a fan of the books which was written about 1917 where it has given inspiration to the likes of James Cameron and George Lucas. So I can understand that some people will think that the titles for some characters would seem dated. Also this was a pulp fiction type of novel.
The film itself I enjoyed thoroughly. It reminded me of old Errol Flynn films. Yes ,there were some slow bit and some holes to the plot. Visually I thought it was very good. The 3D did not really add much to the film to be said. The acting was fine with John Carter played by Taylor Kitsch doing a suitably good job and a surprisingly strong female lead character in Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins) especially for this type of genre. The voice work of Willem Defoe and Samantha Morton was good too. It kept pretty close to the novel as far as I could remember. As for the lack of humour there was very little in the books and what was added worked. There was one bit of the film which I was surprised to see how a rival Thark leader was dispatched. This was a little graphic in my mind for a PG film.
The ending was quite novel ,different to the book and worked really well for the film.
Seeing this on a Saturday morning reminded me of Saturday morning matinee films and I was transported to Barsoom that day.
Yes, I am a bit biased for this film and I was not disappointed. I would definitely see this again.
9/10

Re: John Carter
I was pretty unimpressed by this. It certainly could have been a lot better had the story been more focused and tightened up. Too much illogical nonsense to accept, especially when there was so much droning on.

Re: John Carter
I enjoyed this apart from a few slow bits but I have been known to have a short attention span - I agree with other comments that the alien "dog" character was adorable and I want one!
Re: John Carter
Saw this yesterday thanks to the lovely funthing who kindly donated the tickets, had no trouble with the phones as hubby didn't bring his and mine was left in the car. I'm on the side of those who thought the film was distinctly average, I did enjoy the sets and the cinematography, the planet looked lush and colourful. Also loved how the alien characters seemed to have better personalities than the actual human(like) characters, I loved the monster dog too! Unfortunately, the poster of the film indicates there was going to be a lot of action, there isn't quite frankly and this is very misleading. A lot of the film is just spent talking and talking and explaining and oh, more talking when there should be action scenes! 6/10 from me.

Re: John Carter
Was pleased Edinburgh had a 3 d screening, but actually did not think there was an awful lot of 3d in it.Quite enjoyed parts of the film and like everyone else loved the dog monster. Pleased to see two of my Sharpe actors .Ciaran Hinds and Mark Strong in a big blockbuster. (Although have to be honest preferred Sharpe to John Carter).
Good Sunday morning film, for kids albeit a little violent for them. will I recommend it. No. Would I watch it again No.
7/10 from me

3/10 for me. Didn't enjoy it and can't even recall anything about it now, other than the dog creature.
