100+ as in those who have posted more than 100 times. Perhaps 10+ is doable for now.
What if emails were to be sent by 3rd party software i.e. 1 email sent to massive distribution group via another system.
I'm not sure that solution is viable because phpbb's email notification is personalised and responsive to individual accounts.
Top 50 Poster!

I was reading i through the phpbb forum and I had a thought about the reasons for the excessive notifications. I subscribe to 5 topics and 2 forums and I'm sure there will be other subscribing to most of the forums and a lot of the topics. As the notification emails are sent whenever a new post is made regardless of the number of users that have subscribed to that particular topic it will still counts as a notification. A chit chat type topic like "Movie Gossip and News" generates a notification just the same as the more popular topics like Free Films or "The more tickets available thread - no chat" so why don't you remove the subscribe option on the less important topics. It's probably a lot of work involved but I'm sure there are topics that can be sacrificed so to speak. Another thought might be to restrict the amount of topics an individual can subscribe to and perhaps only allow Mods/Admins to have the full range.
Just some thoughts ..i do work in IT but I'm not at all familiar with the phpbb system.

I think the best option is automatic ban after 2 chatting occurrences in Free Films... this is what causes the most non desirable notifications!

I don't know why but today I haven't had a single email alert. I even tried subscribing to a number of forums to see if I could increase the number of alerts with no luck. Even PM alerts haven't arrived and they usually come regardless.
