Sadly it turned out to be fairly underwhelming (seeing it directly after one of the best films of the year probably didn't help).
After an entertaining opening 30 minutes, the film sadly became distinctly average once the aliens turned up.
Several things made this hard to enjoy. For one it took itself way too seriously and the script was far too po-faced for it's own good. You'd have thought that with 5 writers responsible, one of them could have put some humour into it.
There was also an opportunity for a fun double act between Ford and Craig but they never exploited it. The two actors seemingly in different movies for most of the time.
The aliens motives were also fairly vague and unconvincing. Harrison Ford's character summed it up when he said 'They want gold? What are they gonna do, b*y things?' (probably not the exact quote but close enough).
The cast tried their best and I liked Sam Rockwell and Walton Goggins attempts to inject a bit of humour into proceedings, but it was all for nothing and I quickly got bored.
Cowboys & Aliens wasn't awful, just very average. It works as a western but the lacklustre sci-fi element drags it down. A movie with that title should be a great deal more fun than this is.
:thanks: kk. You always put into words exactly what I thought! o/

I agree with most of what kevinknapman wrote, I just haven't learnt how to repost his comment within mine yet :D

I know that there has been much debate on the cheesy title but I liked it and it I thought that they could do great things with the concept. Alas they only achieved mediocre.

I agree. o/ I was unconvinced with the 'aliens are after the gold', I too wondered 'why???'.
Aliens having 'Predator-like' jaws that instead revealed a pair of hands than a mouth..
I was quite looking forward to this movie after watching the trailer at the first SFF event at Empire last December. Such a shame it took itself too seriously. It could have been a much more entertaining movie if the script was not as dry and the back story had more grit.

Am still thinking of the score... Will edit with my score when I can put a rating to it

Then: Westfield, o2, Clapham

I caught the tail end of Casino Royale last night on ITV2.

It's incredible to see how much Daniel Craig has aged over the last 5 years.
