Saw this is Wandsworth yesterday. Having not read any publicity or seen any trailers, I didn't really know what to expect. I found myself immersed in a spectacular escapist sci-fi romp in the vein of the Saturday morning cinema I used to go to as a child (that dates me!). It reminded me very much of Flash Gordon (minus the shaky sets), Star Wars, Avatar etc. But now having read up a little, I find that John Carter (from the book Princess of Mars) was actually the precursor to all of these. In fact both James Cameron and George Lucas were both said to be inspired by the original book by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Taylor Kitsch (can that really be his name?) added just the right amount of humour to the title role. I also loved the way the dog stole so many scenes. A very inspired addition to the film. The CGI, which became quite annoying and gratuitous in the three more recent Star Wars movies, was actually OK because it was all relevant to the plot. The movie is quite long (at 2 hrs 12 mins) but I didn't find myself looking at my watch at all (which is quite unusual for me) - so that proves that I was 100% engrossed.

Was it Chicago? I thought it was New York.

Also, question that bugged me since I saw it as I can't really remember: I thought it said 1868 first and 1888 later which would make it 20 years difference and not 13? Does anyone remember at all? Was it 1881 instead?

3/10 for me. Didn't enjoy it and can't even recall anything about it now, other than the dog creature.

I'm inclined to agree - although I gave it a slightly higher rating purely for the dog (which seems to be the star of the show judging by the reviews)

I think I finally worked out why my 3D glasses did not work... they are Real3D glasses from Sky, I used them for Tintin and Hugo (both shot in 3D) without any problem; they just don't work for this kind of crap post-production converted movies!

edit: or maybe it's just a surprising coincidence

We had the real 3D glasses yesterday too and were told they weren't the problem. They then adjusted something with the film projection and they miraculously started working.

Actually, I thought this was the best 3D post conversion live action movie I have seen. Second best 3d live action film overall, second to Hugo. I would still prefer 2D, mind but there were some scenes that were quite spectacular in depth, nothing was jarringly out of focus and use of 3D seemed very consistent throughout, I really enjoyed it. Why the hell couldnt Star Wars be as half as good as this and Lucasfilm spent more time on it too. Proves that 3D processing really is down to the quality of craftmanship and that quality ranges from the all too often terrible to the very seldom good.

By the way, a ten minute opening scene of the movie has just been officially released:

Watch the last two Final Destination films and them you will see the best live action use of 3D.
