Re: X-Men: First Class
I've repeatedly said that its been 8 years since we've had a good X-men movie. Well i can now roll back the clock and turn it to 1 hour 45 minutes since we've had a brilliant X-men movie. Had to p*y for this today since i missed out on the ticket (without an AMX card, so i guess i was lucky after reading the horror stories). But it was soo worth it and i have no regrets supporting this film. As everyone said, the story and tension between the 2 leads was excellent. The strong intelligent story and the style were weaved together with such exquisite fashion that it was just artistic to see it done so well. I hate
Wolverine
with a passion and was gutted to hear he was in this, but his scene still made me and the entire cinema laugh. The ending battle brought a tear to my eye since we see the X-men actually work as a team and no one power or person took centre stage and become the hero (i think the reference is obvious enough), which made this X-fan proud
I have 2 problems with this though that are very very minor but still keep it down at 9/10 instead of 10/10.
Angel leaves the team to join Shaw, but Charles doesnt even question her whereabouts. He looks at the survivors of Shaws attack (which was breathtaking btw), and doesnt even care Angel is missing. We see him hear about Darwin though, which was good i guess
My second problem is the Tornado guy was sooo under developed. I dont even think he said 1 line in the movie and it was a shame to see him get wasted when every other character around him had some form of development or characterisation)
But overall, brilliant movie and i cant wait for the sequel now that Fox has finally backed the f**k off

Speaking of problems...
In the final battle when Mystique disguishes herself as Shaw, how does she know what he looks like at that exact time? Do they even know about the helmet at this point?
Re: X-Men: First Class
I was thinking about that as it happened, but i came to the conclusion that Charles said he could see Shaw, so i think off screen Charles put the image of Shaw's current image in Mystiques head to replicate. I then thought "why didnt they show that", but ofcourse it would've ruined the fakeout for us. Clutching at straw's i know but it was the best explanation i came up with while watching and allowed me to continue the film
canadian_turtle wrote:Speaking of problems...

Cat in the hat! Don't ask me why but I actually watched that film yesterday!....(utter rubbish imho).kevinknapman wrote:Took the afternoon of work to see this (having heard nothing about Sunday's screening).
Thought it was a very enjoyable film. More witty and smarter than the average comic book blockbuster. Crucially, behind the flashy special effects and make-up, it had really good acting amongst the main leads. Both McAvoy and Fassbender were very good, with some great support from Kevin Bacon, January Jones and Nicolas Hoult. Not so keen on Jennifer Lawrence to be honest (much better in Winter's Bone) and some of the supporting cast were a little anonymous (I mean, I wouldn't want to suggest that the actress playing Angel was only hired because she's Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet's daughter but....still).
Have to admit I avoided this thread last night, precisely because I didn't want the cameo ruined and it looks like I made the right choice. Not that I'd blame that person though but I'd managed to avoid hearing about it and was glad it was a surprise. Although strictly speaking there are two surprise cameos aren't there?
Jennifer Lawrence briefly turns into Rebecca Romijn (Mystique from the first 3 movies) to show how she would look if she were older
No end credits scene or Stan Lee cameo though, which made a nice change.
If I have reservations about the film, I have to admit that some of the references to the future of the X-Men were a bit cheesy and half expected the actor's to turn to the camera and wink. I also wasn't a big fan of the Beast design. Though Nicolas Hoult was really good in the role, the look of the Beast just reminded me of a character out of a Dr Seuss adaptation (thanks to EthanRunt for this: http://yfrog.com/h8023sj )
Still I did enjoy it and I'd definitely watch it again.
Thank you for the succint review. I'm looking forward to seeing this even more now!! It seems to have been unanimously enjoyed!!

I know eh, i was glad i'd forgotton my phone so didn't have to queue up afterwards. Got in late so was forced to sit at the front......very uncomfortable and i had a thumping headache afterwards.biggins wrote:At Westerhailes Edinburgh was the strictest security they have ever had. I was there early but not allowed in as I don't have an amex card. Separate queue was started and told we would have to wait until just before the film started before we would be allowed in. Phones taken from us and then body scanned - what a fuss!!
Enjoyed the film. 7/10
7/10 from me too as i thought it was a well made film but i haven't seen the others so didn't really connect with the characters. However did like the superhero showoff bits, finding out what they could do. Too predictable for my liking and a bit too comic book hero, just not my preferred genre

AMAZING:) 8/10 <3
Possibly, I don't remember if he was wearing the helmet then or not. But even so she wouldn't have known though what clothes he was wearing that day (unless he never changes)
funthing29 wrote:
Hadn't she seen him when he attacked the secret CIA base ie when Darwin was killed and Angel switched sides?
canadian_turtle wrote:Speaking of problems...

Unrelated but was it just me who assumed from the posters that Nicholas Hoult was going to be a young Cyclops? The hair and glasses really made him a deadringer I found and even without the glasses and the hairdo that way he looks a lot like James Marsden.

Didn't get to see the film last night as was clearly not on the ball enough to blag my way in without an amex card! Never known anything like that before at a preview - hopefully thats the last time!
Have orange Wednesday option so might have to p*y and see it next week as lots of good reviews
Thanks again to pxc, Beate and ejwrank for the tickets - we so nearly made it!
