Ethan, are you the one in the glasses who looks like he's asleep?

Oh my god. I came out so unflattery. I'm at 8 seconds in, sitting in the cinema, with the massive hair pointing forwards. Everyone around me holding hands to the face, im not.
Preferred cinemas (in order of choice): Hatfield, Enfield, Lee Valley, Watford, Leicester Square/Central London, Greenwhich or anywhere within the catchment area of those.

this looks like a good movie. The trailer reminds me of the oldschool horror movies of the 80's with priests and paranormal investigators. Cant wait

Got to see this tonight at the Vue West End and was expecting to find some familiar fmuk faces. I knew a couple people opted for the Game of Throne but I found no one at the back seats where I knew fmuk hangs out ;) What a damn shame because I would have loved to hear you girls scream! And scream aplenty you would have as this was one damn jumpy and scary film!

From the makers of Saw, this was surprisingly devoid of any gore and instead what we get is a refreshingly old school scare fest, 80s style. No stupid over-used CGI, just good effective camera work and traditional make up effects (akin to that of Sixth Sense).

But this film was so similar in structure to one of my favourite 80s scary movie that if I mention what that movie is, I feel I would spoil the movie for you! So yeah, I'm pretty much saying this is an act for act total rip off. I'm surprised they're not even calling it a remake, or a reboot. But I don't mind the extraordinary similarities as this has its own signature and flavour to win over fans of the "original" and definitely would win over those who haven't.

Did I jump out of my skin? F**king 20 times. At one time I worried if I was too far away to get back in my body. Granted, they are your traditional BOO moments with the sound cranked up to maximum, you know the type but they are pretty damn effective and done with great timing.

The audience clearly loved the scares whilst dreading it at the same time. It's amusing to find people trying to laugh the scares off and I was one of them, its like a defence mechanism. You know you just got tango'd so what do you do? you try laugh it off!

Having said that I think they used that card a bit too many times in the first and second act so it was quite noticeable that later scary moments didn't quite have us jumping out of our seats and in fact some fell quite flat.

My other gripe was that the last act did not quite reach the urgency of excitement that the film was clearly building to and I was hoping for a little more visual imagination. But I might have felt that way because I'm comparing it to the um.."original" and also, before the film started we were told by the director and writer, that they had a low budget to work with (smart thing to tell us in hindsight actually so we dont feel too dissapointed with the lack of scale in the last act. ) So it was moderately exciting but not as fulfilling as I would have liked.

Even though I think this a clear rip off of an 80s film I love, this delivered exactly what our sadistic inner demons have been crying out for lately, a movie that scares the bejesus out of us. Recent attempts like last year's Last Exorcism failed abysmally (though I do love that particular film for different reasons).

So this is a great movie to watch on a Friday or Saturday night with your friends and for guys with their dates as I guarantee your arms will be sore as your girlfriends grab you violently several times.

I think around 70% of the audience stayed for the Q&A which went on for a whole hour! But it was an entertaining hour. The writer (who also appeared in a smaller role in the movie) and director were on stage answering a plethora of questions from the audience. The director looks very young to me, I wonder how bloody old was he when he directed Saw, surely he must have been just a kid!?! Anyway, the two lads are frequent collaborators and clearly enjoy working together. They also had a great deal of sense of humour that made the hour enjoyable. From the answers, I learn that the budget was pretty damn low, only $800,000. Considering that figure, they did a damn good job. What the director stressed was that the lower the budget the more freedom he and his writer had to film whatever they want without any interjections from the executives. Their next film will be a sci fi movie but again on low budget. The 2 lads are Aussies. The director's 2 favourite scary movies are Jaws and guess what, yep, the movie I believe he just remade! He actually admits he isnt re-inventing the wheel, just merely repainting it! Well that was honest. There were much more interesting tidbits but I think I'm boring you enough as it is.

SO come on girls and boys, dont chicken out of a scary movie next time! I am shocked this thread has not had much feedback!

And oh one last thing, what the f**k is up with me and goody bags. Why cant I ever get lucky and have a goody bag worth mentioning? Last time I had a goody bag, turned out to be a f**king cardboard cut out of a goody bag with a hole cut out of it to make a handle. This time it was a business card that simply had "Spectral Sightings: Experts in Paranormal Investigation" with a facebook link. :wall:

Oh, one more last thing ;) If you really really want to know what that 80s film I am referring to then click the spoiler but I warn you, this film follows exactly the same recipe only with slightly different spices

8/10

Saw this at Leicester Square. Wasn't that keen but admittedly I'm not a massive horror fan: http://moviefilmreviews.wordpress.com/2 ... insidious/

Maybe I should have gone to this then, rather than the Game of Thrones! Although I probably won't be able to go to sleep for months afterwards, I am too much a scaredy cat :sofa:
