Huge
Re: Huge
I can't agree more with the comments so far. It was HUGE-LY boring. I really struggled to connect with either of the main characters, and really didn't know where the film wanted to take you. The end was simply mystifying. I said to my OH afterwards that I just didn't find anything funny - I thought maybe it was a film for comedians and maybe they found it funny. But really - I cant see how. Apart from the other stand ups in the film who told a couple of jokes, there were no jokes. And neither of the leads were funny. Ok, there was potential in 'Clarke', but 'Warren' - he was intensely boring and annoying (and a bit strange). I didn't like or get his character at all. And the all star cast didn't really need to be an all star cast. They added no value whatsoever to the film. To be fair I didn't think it would be great, but I did expect to laugh a bit more. When Ben said in the intro that this was 'not a comedy but a film about comedy', he should have added - so go home now as you will be bored. Sorry to go on, but it really was bad. 2/10 for me and that was for the character Darren.

Beate wrote:The overwhelming feeling of tonight was boredom. The only thing that was huge was my disappointment. Disappointment about SFF ticket users being given second-class "stalls only" tickets while a lot of the upstairs seating of course remained stubbornly empty. Disappointment with the failing of the air condition which made the temperature unbearable and a 78 minute film seem double that length. Disappointment about the two females to my left who talked all through the film. Disappointment in the stand up acts that raised about 3 laughs from me. Only the chubby guy with the double-barrelled name was really good, and I originally liked the middle-class girl with the Ancient History degree until she started getting really smutty. Honestly, is this a rule in stand-up comedy - the smuttier the better?
Then we had Ben Miller on stage for 5 minutes, his co-author plus Thandie Newton and the two main actors for 1 minute. They weren't even allowed to say anything, they just stood around awkwardly.
The film - amazing. Amazing how a collaboration of so many comedians could have produced something so astoundingly unfunny. Yes, I get it, it's more about the friendship of those two guys than the big gags, but hey, it's a story about stand-up comedians, at least make it a bit funny? Just a bit? Instead we get Noel Clarke in a wig and later in a chicken costume, Johnny Harris with puppy-dog eyes, Zoe from Eastenders in a role that went nowhere, various cameos from other comedians, and Thandie Newton, who's incidentally pronounced Tandie and not Sandie as I always assumed, playing a cocaine-sniffing air-head for all of 5 minutes. Story: not found.
Knock Knock. Who's there? No one. Exactly.
4/10
LOL..I laugh more reading your comments than from watching the movie or the stand up's last night. I must say you have put in words what we all went thru last evening so aptly. I was in 2 minds to go but since no one toook my tickets I thought of going but sadly and clearly a bad choice. Awful movie and awful premeier.
Very dissapointing movie

Re: Huge
I agree with all the posters here. It was HUGEly boring. The open mic session never really took off as time was so short and I just felt embarrassed for most of the participants. The thing that made me laugh the most in the open mic session was the fact the the first person on didn't even bother to show up. Maybe we should have taken his lead.
Considering that Ben Miller wrote and directed it - he just looked plain embrassed to be there, as did the other members of the cast.
As for the film - well, for a film that started at 7pm I could not believe it was over by 8:15pm. Had we known that, having already made the effort to trek up to Leicester Square, we would have gone to see a play as well. The main characters had no rapport - in fact I couldn't understand why Warren wanted to become a double act with Clarke after only having met him for a couple of minutes. It just didn't make sense! Also mentioning all of those comedians' names was a big rip-off, they only appeared in a party scene and had no speaking parts.
Best actor was the goldfish, followed closely by Clarke's puppet!

LOL, I had forgotten about that! They said something about "not a good start to his career", then quickly called the next person!ladams888 wrote:I agree with all the posters here. Re: Huge
Oh my god this was so poor. A totally unfunny, terribly acted non-story that should never had been made. A couple of blokes fail at a few open mic sessions, and err, that's it. Where was the story exactly?
How the hell does something so lame as this make it to the big screen in the first place? I suppose if you are a luvvie with a crap screenplay, all you have to do is pitch it to your luvvie mates and any old s**t can get through.
And do any comedians do anything, I mean ANYTHING, other than crude sex jokes?

Re: Huge
Hahaha, don't really have much to add, very funny reading all the posts. Agree with what most have said. Film was so boring - I would have been embarrassed to be associated with it. I can only think that most of the 'stars' like Thandie Newton and the well known comedians agreed to appear as a favour to Ben Miller. In fact I'm sure they must all be his friends because there was a polite round of applause at the end! Think a lot of them were sitting in the good seats at the back - I saw Rory McGrath and David Baddiel in the foyer at the end.
I also agree that the stand-up didn't really work. I did give them all a good clap though because I appreciate that it takes guts to get up and put yourself out there - especially when your material is only so-so. 2/10 and I think that was 1 for the venue and 1 for having the stars of the film at the screening.
