I have a huge crush on Tom Hiddleston and loved his Fitzgerald, but Adrien Brody's Dali was amazing. 8.5/10

Re: Midnight in Paris
It really has a lot in common with the Purple Rose of Cairo and it was one of best WA's film I've seen in years. Having studied that hystorical period at uni for my American and French literature exams, I was just as fascinated as OW's character whenever he met all those people

Re: Midnight in Paris
Oh well who'd have thought it.
I found a Woody Allen film I actually like.
The French music and scenery was lovely if a bit overdone at times, and Owen Wilson's journey through a 1920s Paris enjoyable, even though it took a bit to get going I thought. I disagree with your friend, David, that "it is completely unapproachable unless you have a fairly extensive knowledge of the artists and authors of the period". Sorry, but just not true. Even OH enjoyed it, and I don't think he is that up on his Dali and Bunuel.
7.5/10

Re: Midnight in Paris
If you read a relatively short autobiographical book by Hemmingway called A Moveable Feast, it basically covers most of these characters and what links them together - Gertrude Stein's open house evenings for artists in Paris - in a very readable way. I read this book a long time ago and was knocked out by Hemmingway's honesty in it about how badly he eventually treated his wife of the time when he was a struggling writer in Paris with her and their newborn baby. It's a book full of the energy of youth and the sadness of regret - a beautiful read.
I also enjoyed Midnight in Paris and was surprised at what a good actor Owen Wilson is. I have to say, however, that increasingly Marian Cotillard just gets on my tits. Is it acceptable to say that? She was excellent as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose but since then just over does any role she has.
