I absolutely hated this film. Hated it. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

Just back from Cinema...went to see Jack Reacher.....I enjoyed it.
I sometimes think Tom Cruise gets a bad Press because he is Tom Cruise.

Re: Jack Reacher
Saw this today and it was mindless fun. Great for a Sunday afternoon film and not taxing at all.
Reminded me of old western films. The ending was a little bit of a let down. Robert Duvall was good and great to see him back on the screen for a change.

Re: Jack Reacher
Saw this tonight with Steve9875, who clearly enjoyed it.
Tom Cruise was so-o-o wrong for this. Just dire. I'd have walked out if I had been on my own. The camera angles shifted all the time to try and fool the audience - how dumb do they think we are? (Big people move differently - my dad was a big man so I know this. I know that they are seen/spotted differently, as I did this as a child.) Aaarrgghhh. Clearly TC is too small to know this, but Lee Child (as he is known) is tall enough to know this.
When I heard Lee Child talking about this a few years ago (3? I posted at the time), it was going to be Hugh Jackman as Jack Reacher, but he clearly went off for Les Mis rather than this. Pity, as he would have been better in this role. A new JR is needed to keep this running - the cinema was less than 10% full tonight - yet Midnight Kingdom hours later was already just about sold out.
I have tried to think about other actors who would be better and come up with this rough and ready list - in no particular order.
Channing Tatum - not as tall as Reacher, but of the build I expect. And I believe his punch would floor someone.
Wentworth Miller - although he may need to lose pounds... (and maybe grow hair?) but fits with my view of Reacher. (And who was his nemesis in PRison Break? Dominic Purcell? He is another option.)
If Gerald Butler had not become such a sleezebag, he could have fitted this (think back to Tomb Raider)
I could even see Jake Gyllenhaal (he's done similar a few times), Ryan Gosling (if he bulked up), Ashton Kutcher (well not much depth to TC, so why not! Better to look at...)
None of them are 6' 5", I know, but.... TC is a long way from this. Indeed, there are so many actors (I have others on my list) that could have done this better, but the key is that Tom Cruise was too old. too small, too 'engaging'. too smooth. Yukk, yukk, yukk, yukk.
I know that some thought TC charming, but... "in person" charming does not equal a good performance, especially for JR, and that is part of what we p*y for.
Very disappointed....

Re: Jack Reacher
Looks like a lot of us watched Jack Reacher today. We plumped for a 3.15pm showing at WIQ which was only about half full and generally an agreeable experience but maybe they could have stopped after 5 trailers, especially as most of them were for some violent action films with explosions. I can only remember Gangster Squad and Star Trek - Into Darkness.
There's a lot to like about this film and quite a few things to dislike, like the violence and treatment of women plus having an altogether not very plausible story. Also, the music was earbashing at times. But it was entertaining and you can say what you want - Tom Cruise is a damn fine actor. You might not like him personally but he didn't get the roles he played by being shite. I don't care how tall Jack Reacher is supposed to be - Tom Cruise is a good action hero despite pushing 50. Werner Herzog was all kinds of wrong though - scary.

Yep, I was watching this today too! Not bad, 8/10. I didn't care that Tom Cruise was not 6'5, thought he did a pretty good (and believable) job. I did however have a few issues with Rosamund Pike staring off into the distance when thinking - like it was too hard! She's a beautiful and great actress so I was a little put off by this.
I think the film is worth seeing, whether or not you've read the books.

Thoroughly enjoyed the film. Thought Tom Cruise did well in the lead role, despite him not being 6'5.

Re: Jack Reacher
Cortone, did you read that "Lee Child" quotation about TC having only 90% of JR's height (ahem!) but being 100% JR? And what about my suggestion of Clive Owen - or another tall male Brit, if any suitable names occur? I don't have any attachment to the books but do agree about tall people moving differently and I thought TC adopted an odd sort of swagger for this film; plus a weird, sneering facial expression - very odd and alienating, as he didn't seem even likeable to me, let alone trustworthy or in any way impressive, legendary, etc - cocky and arrogant, perhaps, yes, but that surely wasn't the intention?Cortone wrote:Saw this tonight with Steve9875, who clearly enjoyed it.
