Haha. But his accent was pure Terry-Thomas (or perhaps Leslie Philips) rather than Frankie Howerd.

Is there anyone smart out there that can answer a long-standing question for me. What did the Romans call their country? Obviously not Rome as that was the capital city. I noted that in the film the map called it Italia, but that would have made them Italians and the Italian Empire. Interesting how the Pompeiians resented the Romans and certainly didn't feel they were them.

They were so lax today at Vue West End, I think probably glad so many people still turned up (cos of the tube strike, I hope not that it was so bad! :giggle:) On the seats were Joseph's gourmet popcorn - caramel or caramel with rich Belgian Chocolate. So as we all wanted the caramel with the chocolate we did a switch. Sorry for those who came in after us! Lovely to see ejwrank, asamaic, cliveas and valda, and thanks for the company ritamistry.

A lovely intro by Kit Harington and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, tense and exciting, granted script was bad and acting wooden. Just go for the ride, disaster movie with a bit of romance thrown in, and spectacular visual effects with the erupting volcano and tsunami. Kiefer Sutherland had a strange accent though. And all the way through, thought Kit Harington looks so familiar then at the very second before the credits came up realised who it was, a Orlando Bloom! Adewale was the best though, in a film that really don't expect too much from its actors!

I'd be interested to know what people would consider to be the all round best disaster movie. By 'all round' I mean cast, direction, expectations fulfilled and contribution to the pantheon of great films, not just studio fodder for those who wouldn't know a review from a packet of popcorn! It would be useful, I guess, to define the word 'disaster'. Is Jurassic Park a disaster movie? Is Godzilla? Especially as you can argue that both portend to scientific meddling and its consequences. For me, clearly, films like Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure pass the disaster test, and Pompeii would fall into that category too.

muscle, muscle and .......muscle...
The effect of the film is invincible, however due to lack of storyline it becomes a little bit boring to me.

Really enjoyed the film. Pure escapism. Lots of explosive action and visually it was very good. I agree, the acting was a little wooden at times though.

I didn't realise it was Orlando Bloom..

yip. OH mentioned seeing a couple embracing. Though with the force of the lava I guess they be lying down. However nothing to say that someone finding them and preserving them standing up. The real thing happen so quickly. Which is why it was an important find when then they discovered Pompeii in the 19th century. Artistic license for the film drew the event out.

see Biggin's post
biggins wrote:I also have been to Pompeii and seen the fossilised bodies in the ruins so it was quite real in that respect. But they were taken unawares as it happened so quickly not like the film when they had all these warnings.

The peninsular was indeed called Italia, of which Rome was one of many communities. Being militarily strong, however, and expansionist as a result, they simply went about the business of conquering their neighbors first, then everyone else!

The action and 3D actually worked quite well in the final act, but the build-up, the script and the characterisation was awful. There was enough unintentional comedy to keep it from being boring though.

3/10
