Re: Edge of Tomorrow
Honestly, there were people at Odeon Greenwich at 5.30pm for this last night. Oh hang on, that was us... But others arrived soon after so I suggested a queuing system to the usher who took it up gratefully. When we were finally let in we were given 3D glasses and told to switch off our phones. Security stayed throughout the screening but did nothing about the annoying talkers further down our row. Unfortunately they were too far away for me to do something about them!
How is Emily Blunt alive at the end? Hasn't time moved on?
.
It was a typical Tom Cruise movie with a few laughs and a lot of heroics.

This kind of sums it up. When the first battle was repeated over and over I thought if this is what the whole film consists of I am going to cry. Thankfully there were varations but I can't say I understood the whole plot, and I am still puzzled about the ending.funthing29 wrote:Entertaining enough for action sequences and special effects but full of plot holes and lacking any decent characterisation. I also thought the 3D could have been put to better use. Is it just me or does the ending make no sense??

Re: Edge of Tomorrow
Saw this at the BFI/IMAX/NFT. Entertaining but with some plot holes etc. which was a bit surprising given Chris McQuarrie's involvement. Shame it wasn't a 3D screening, but this was more than made up for by getting to meet Tom Cruise and getting a photo taken with him. He was charming, which was great given the mob of autograph dealers (they had folders of stuff ready to be sign)ed behind me who were trying to get his attention. I love that he maintains his tradition of taking time to meet fans at premieres.
Time reset yet again to further back in the day this time - before he even met the General. Because it was the main creature who was killed this time, it stayed dead at the beginning of the new day. I don't know if it was because the big creature's blood retriggered the time jump capability or he absorbed the big creature's power. Either way he reset the day and the aliens remained dead.
Beate wrote:
How is Emily Blunt alive at the end? Hasn't time moved on?
.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow
So I arrived at about 7.10am for the ridiculously early Edge of Tomorrow Premiere at BFI IMAX, to find the pens were heaving with people already and spoke to a couple who had SFF tickets who had arrived at 6am and was told SFF had overbooked by over 50 people and they could not get in! Others had arrived at 5.20am!!
Although some people were going round serving hot drinks, I was told they had been round serving breakfast earlier, it was not a nice day to be stuck in the pen in the rain, already 3-4 rows deep with very tall people, so could not see any red carpet action, I did not hang around. Met up with ritamistry (thank you for taking me!) and we wound our way round to the ticket holders queue and met up with valda.
So winners to the screening were given a champagne breakfast. Why they told you to come at 7am, when they did not let us in till 8am, but there were lots of bucks fizz, soft and hot drinks, lots of pastries, bacon rolls and veggie rolls, that it was actually quite civilised. After being seated for about an hour, the producer, director and the two main stars, Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise were introduced by Alex Zane (who else!) and Tom Cruise thanked us for coming so early, and joked perhaps they should make premieres even earlier!
Then off they went and the 3D film started. We were given these huge oversized 3D glasses which sat flat against your faces with no curve. Was not sure if it was the glasses or the 3D but if you tilted your head, or not looked dead straight, the film was blurred, so you had to sit really upright and as it was a lot of fast action, I got motion sickness!
The film was a lot of fun, and a lot of fast action, a sci-fi, with a bit of romance thrown in. The humour was very tongue in cheek. It felt like a video game where you died and come alive again to fight again! After the first few repeats, it was good the story moved along and the scene could have happened countless times already but they did not repeat it, or they just jumped or fast forward, otherwise my head was already in a spin from motion sickness, I could not have stomach more of the same! However, the sci-fi and battles were incredibly well done.
I am actually warming to Tom Cruise and he seemed even attractive to me this time round (never found him attractive before!) and looking younger. Loved the gorgeous Emily Blunt and she could do no wrong in this strong, believable character. A good script and creative story and I liked how it developed. 8/10

Were we at the same screening? Not 3D? You obviously did not think much of the 3Dnickchanel wrote:Saw this at the BFI/IMAX/NFT. Entertaining but with some plot holes etc. which was a bit surprising given Chris McQuarrie's involvement. Shame it wasn't a 3D screening.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow
There seemed it be lots of people in the pens that never had tickets .Some of the security never checked tickets. We arrived at 5.45am too chaos no one seemed too know about the wristbands etc. No breakfast for us just fruit juice. My lucky Daughter got a photo with Tom Cruise when He spotted Her getting squashed by a load of Men. He grabbed Her phone and pulled Her forward and said are You ok sweetie and told the blokes too give her space. At least He cares about His fans.
Our film was not in 3D we were directed too BFI Southbank and I thought We were suppose too be in the Imax.
We both really enjoyed the film.

Re: Edge of Tomorrow
Enjoyed this a lot. A smart, fun sci-fi blockbuster that sells its hokey far-fetched premise (Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers) with considerable flair and humour, never taking itself too seriously. It also kept enough variation with its setup, which thankfully meant it never got too repetitive.
A witty script certainly helps too, though it still amuses me that one of the co-writers (Jez Butterworth) was also responsible for plays like Mojo and Jerusalem.
Cruise and Blunt make a fine double act in what is Liman's best film in ages. Plus Noah Taylor is in it, and he's always awesome.
