The Maze Runner
Re: The Maze Runner
The denouement was very reminiscent of ‘The Cabin in the Woods’. As often, a little more spent on the script and a little less on the SFX would have worked wonders.
Mindless entertainment, lacking the crucial element of mystery.

Re: The Maze Runner
Lord of the Flies meets a combination of all the other dystopian teenage fiction of recent years.
Poor script from lazy scriptwriting. It needed a good script Editor, or worse.
I thought Mr Poulter was wasted in his role which he played rather one dimensionally. The girl was wasted. That section seemed to have been badly edited as it jumped rather drastically.
Edinburgh was about 60% full tonight. There were a few sniggers at some scenes which seemed particularly silly.
I have seen much better dystopian teenage dramas recently and I read a much better book with a very similar catch a long long time ago.
Disappointing. Surprised if they green light more of same without some changes.

Re: The Maze Runner
I was somewhat disappointed to discover that this was open-ended and thus suggestive of a sequel/franchise. That pretty much says that I wasn't that impressed with it. I did enjoy it, but it felt almost like a carbon copy of The 100 or any similar TV series. I seemed to lose steam right at the EXIT sign which was rather appropriate and raised a few laughs.
Will Poulter and his amazing eyebrows didn't shine at all in this. Seems they have lost their way a little since being so promising in We're The Millers. I know that he had proved that he can pull off a mean American accent, but what was the point of him using it in this? The other wee guy - Peter Pan lookalike had an accent as British as Yorkshire Pudding so it really wasn't necessary.
I do wish monsters didn't have to scuttle and move at superspeed in these things. I get it that the fast scuttle adds to the distaste - as in the fast running spiders so beloved of Beate and MrsMcG - but it means they are a blur most of the time so you lose the chance to appreciate their detail.
Sadly lacklustre, but with plenty of promise.

Re: The Maze Runner
Saw this in Glasgow Cineworld which was only 60% full. I enjoyed this film far more than I expected. I had not read the books and knew almost nothing about the story before the screening. I definitely agree with the comparison with Lord of the Flies meets Hunger Games. I would have preferred not to see the large creatures and think there would have been more tension by not actually seeing them! . . .not dissimilar to the few I had visit me recently!
I assume there will be at least one other film . . .depending on money/contracts.
I would go and see them if free!

Newt who was played by Thomas Sangster. Wee dude from Love Actually.stuartboy wrote:The other wee guy - Peter Pan lookalike had an accent as British as Yorkshire Pudding so it really wasn't necessary.
Never read the books but surprised at how much I enjoyed this and even at 113 minutes long didn't really feel it. Definitely the feeling of Lord Of The Flies with a girl mixed in with The Hunger Games. Kaya Scodelario is a great actress so why make her character Teresa as an afterthought? It is stunning to see and I can understand why the Grievers could be frightening to some especially if you don't like arachnid-like creatures.

Re: The Maze Runner
Kaya Scodelario - who was Effy in Skins. Also English. So why did Newt not bother even attempting a US accent? Just seems strange if it was felt necessary for the others to do one.Yinster wrote:Newt who was played by Thomas Sangster. Re: The Maze Runner
Watched this last night and found myself enjoying it much more than I thought I would. As has been said no real character development and can only assume the girl was introduced so that she can have a bigger part in the next film whithout have to explain who she is. Would only go to see part 2 if it's free though. 6.5/10
Re: The Maze Runner
For those with tickets for the Heat magazine showing, any ideas on which edition as I can't find it in the magazine (11-17 Oct)?
