I think whether one film is going to be the best film of the year or its the best actress of the year is always going to be open to debate, but the prestige of the Oscars is the acknowledgement from your industry peers that you have made a worthy piece of work. That is why it is always going to be the most sought after prize. You can win the Palme d'Or, which is very prestigious as well, but it's never going to be the same. It's only judged by a select panel of people or the Golden Globes or the National Board of Reviews or any of the other critics awards.

I am not surprised Avatar got a best pic nom, judging from the glowing reviews it's been receiving. Maybe Titanic all over again? Cameron's going to be king of the worldddd.....

I think the Oscars might not be as clearcut as it first appeared, as the campaigns for Invictus and Nine seems to be spluttering quite abit, considering no ones going to see them in the cinema in the States and their reviews have been good but not glowing. Of course I am still championing, Up in the Air, as it's one of the best films in a while...
and Avatar seems sure to get a few noms now.

Yeah, I'm suprised at Invictus (although thankfully not so much at Nine). It might be that the whole Rugby angle is what's causing the problems - there's a sleeper hit film about an American footballer called The Blind Side which is cleaning up at the box office right now.

Having said that, the box office performance of a film is not the biggest factor in whether a film gets Oscar recognition - normally it's the other way round, and a film gets a new lease of life at the box office after getting some Oscar wins...

James Cameron has just won Best film and Best Directing for a drama for Avatar at the Golden Globes. I have to say I think the bandwagon is starting to roll for this film for the Oscars and when it has made this much money at the box office and almost universal technical (if not critical) acclaim, the oscar voters do sit up and take notice. It's probably a dead cert now that it will get a best pic oscars nom, especially as I heard this year they are taking 10 noms for best pic?

The best indicators for the Oscars following the results of the Globes are probably these awards -

Best Picture - Avatar
Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart
Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia
Best Supporting Actress - Mo'nique for Precious
Best Supporting Actor - Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds
Best Screenplay - Jason Reitman for Up In The Air
Best Animated Film - Up

I reckon Avatar will probably get Best Picture for a number of reasons - its technical achievement, box office success, and the desperate need for the Oscars to win some popularity and recognition back from viewers. I would hope that Kathryn Bigelow then gets Best Director for The Hurt Locker rather than James Cameron in order to restore some balance!

I wonder what the film Crazyheart is like....Haven't heard anything about it, apart from the fact that it was almost going straight to DVD. I was rooting for Clooney, but I had a feeling it might be the kind of film to get the noms, but won't win many...I hope not, as it's a really good film I think.

Crazy Heart is a story about a washed-up Country singer (called "Bad Blake"! :P), played by Jeff Bridges, who finds redemption through a younger woman, in this case a journalist played by Maggie Gyllenhall, who happens to be following him around for a story on the crash and burn of his career.

So it's exactly the kind of film that Oscar voters love, plus Jeff Bridges is well overdue some recognition for his work (sadly, they don't have a "Best Dude" Oscar category... :P), which is why it has suddenly popped up in the awards season without creating much of a fuss beforehand. The same kinda thing happened with Frozen River last year.

It was meant to be a small-scale film with a limited release and Jeff Bridges even turned it down a few times too before taking on the role, but now that it's getting some attention it's becoming a bigger and bigger film. If it wins some awards you may even see it getting a release over here...
