Thoroughly enjoyed this! Didn't know what to expect. It was quirky and upbeat. Andy Garcia was great. Good family story. Glad I didn't miss it! o/ 9/10

Thought this was pretty good and often very funny. Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies were both excellent. Not as keen on the kids. The boy was incredibly annoying and if I was feeling uncharitable I might suggest that the actress playing the daughter only got the job because she's Andy Garcia's daughter in real life. Which I'm not of course. Emily Mortimer was a little annoying too. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to find her pretentious, endearing or both. Although Alan Arkin had an effective cameo as the acting teacher.

The story of multiple lies built up nicely and the climactic confrontation was well done. I agree with soonforgotten about the son's story. It didn't really add anything to the overall story. You got the impression the film-makers felt the same as it didn't really play a part in the final scene and never really had a satisfying point to it.

Not a perfect film then but worth seeing.

We weren't quite as enthusiastic about this film as the rest of you were but we did enjoy it and we thought there were some funny scenes -- especially the one around the dinner table. What was Emily Mortimer doing in this? And did anyone really believe she was from Schenectady? I'm an American and I certainly didn't.

Glad to see so many familiar faces when we entered the Islington Vue and it was a relief to sit in a cinema with a good view and comfortable seats.

Is it worth p*ying to see this film, or do I wait for the DVD to be reduced in price?

Quite an empty cinema in Fulham, so, we managed to snatch the VIP seats. Nice! A good start :D When in with zero expectation. And guess what, we're like most of you. My hubby and I loved it. Sorry to fellow audience cause i think we among the loudest that laugh from time to time. It's a refreshing 'real life' story since we've been fed by fantasy, over the top, too sophisticated technological movie. Kind of reminding me of American Beauty but with fun twisted dysfunctional family. We laughed so hard when
Vince turned the table around after he knocked down the car in front of him. And the guy took-off and apologized. So, does when Vince vomited instead of angry when heard the wife has passionate encounter with his son.
We do loved those simple yet subtle jokes :bwl: And we really appreciate the values behind the story ;) . Overall, glad went to watch this and postpone A-team for next week. An easy 8/10 and Garcia-Margulies surprisingly has strong chemistry. o/

City Island was cancelled at Vue, Thurrock tonight. Although management knew this afternoon that the film hadn't arrived, we were only sent an email by Telegraph Subscriber's Club at 18.09 cancelling the film, a bit late as we were already at the cinema.

Management gave us a choice of 2 other films to see for free - Inception or Toy Story 3. We found Inception and the concept of 'dream theives' a totally pointless, repetative waste of time! Wish I hadn't returned the A Team tickets for Southend.

p*y for it!!!! It is a great night's entertainment! Loved it - from start to finish! But I will probably b*y this on DVD too when it comes out!

Having checked this out in advance, had super-high expectations. It exceeded them. Even though I am not well just now, this lifted my spirits no end! I thought the daughter's role was really weak, so not sure whether it really mattered who got that role. I am quite OK with teenage boys liking chunky women - they often do, as they are cuddly and not threatening! (I'm not describing me ;) , but one of my best friends. Adults judge her size negatively, but having just attended an 18th birthday at her house, the teenage boys all loved her! And maybe it is 'nice' to see that everyone in a movie does not need to be stick thin?) Emily Mortimer seemed to be playing Martha Lane Fox in some sort of fantasy situation. I loved the house - right on the waterfront - wow. Not what I thought of the Bronx!

Overall, it is great fun - not a major story, but very good film with loads of insights into families.... At least a 9/10 from me. Thanks to the ticket fairy for my tickets!

It was very empty in the Vue York. PeteYork had nabbed VIP seats ( :thanks:) met allsinging and her daughter on the way out, and we all had a good natter - we were in good spirits after the movie.

Would you be okay with a character helping an anorexic starve herself for sexual gratification? To me, morbid obesity is just as unhealthy and unsightly. This aspect of the film made me feel pretty uncomfortable on several levels.
102 Different free films seen in 2010 plus 2 repeat viewings and a few tv show screenings... not too shabby. Thanks to everyone for their contributions here.

OH and I saw this at a sparsely-attended Vue Croydon Grants (where were you sitting, tilly?) and we LOVED it! We had such a great time, laughing out loud a lot and we emerged with that warm glow produced by seeing a fun, feelgood film. Yes, there were flaws, though I wouldn't necessarily identify the same quibbles as others. I did think Emily Mortimer's role was odd and there was no explanation given for her British accent, but the constant clashes between various members of the dysfunctional family were hilarious. Some fab one-liners, too - OH laughed so much at one point that he started coughing and spluttering. I don't often say this, but I'd almost like to see it again, both because it was so good and because there was so much to take in.

Huge thanks again to the Ticket Fairy for giving us a great night out.
