Totally agree with Steve - how did the neighbours sleep through that?
spuckle wrote:Thoroughly enjoyed it. The shot of Bruce getting out the spinning car, gun at the ready, was particularly awesome.
Loved that scene - he looked so cool.

A good couple of hours of escapism - it was better than anticipated - easily 8/10 from me.

I don't think Steve mentioned that we Yorkies (Steve, PeteYork, allsinging and I) went to see RED together (Steve's choice of film, but we were all up for this), and using the Cineworld tickets (Thanks for mine Pete..:D )

We all loved it - the actors, the humour, the action scenes, travelling across the US, the plots and subplots, etc.. Yes, the story was not that believable in places (and the thought of Bruce Willis reading all those books was especially unbelievable!), but we weren't wanting a documentary, just something to entertain us. And it did just that!

And as for Mary-Louise Parker, as ever, I spent half the film trying to work out what I knew her from... The West Wing. Wish I was better at recognising faces, and remembering film names too.

Much like The Losers, I found this to be a tad disappointing comic book adaptation, great cast but it just didn't grab me all that much, there was no tension or uncertainty, and it all just looked too easy. John Malkovich had the best part no doubt, but I really enjoyed seeing Ernest Borgnine in there as the old records keeper, Brian Cox was great too, and had to do a double take seeing Richard Dreyfuss! Fun dumb action movie.. 6/10.

It seems that if you know the comic book, you are expecting different things from the film, than if you just go along to see a film with these actors and characters in it...

I felt that John Malkovich was acting a role like he played in "Of Mice and Men", which was as a simpleton.... quite what fitted his character's history in this role. I get worried when actors transfer between parts like this. (As in my comments on Sean Penn in the past. But he got an Oscar for doing this, so I'm clearly out of line as others don't seem to worry! :noo: :noo: )

generally good mindless fun, a la the Losers. So the same criticisms apply - impossible events, a script that needed tightening up. On top of that there were some rather odd disjointed (not impossible, just plain wierd) scenes, like Morgan Freeman's death and the neighbours who never woke up in the early house attack. This made it feel a bit of a rushed work. At times it felt a bit long and yawnsome. Thank goodness the fantastic John Malkovich was there to make us laugh, he saved the film really. And its true, Mirren with a gun looks well hot.

fun though, and hey you cant expect much subtelty and wit from a comic book film (unless its called Kickass, that is). i do think it could have been a tighter film with some editing and even rewriting a few scenes.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

Saw about 1/4 of this film a few days ago and it seemed quite disappointing. Might catch the rest of it if it's showing on TV

An older colleague (yes, there are a few) was describing this film to me the other day and oddly enough, I thought it sounded reasonably interesting from what she said, whereas I hadn't fancied it on its release. I did think I might rent it, though it'd have to be next month as I've already received my allocation of DVDs for February. Not being funny (especially as I didn't stay for the end of Black Swan yesterday) but maybe it helps to see more of it? Though indeed, why would you carry on watching if it didn't seem worth it?
