Only myself and prettyxcool have commented about the Alzheimer component of the story (maybe because of its personal relevance) but here is an article from the Alzheimers Reading Room that talks about it (many spoilers for those who haven't seen the film yet):

The Alzheimers 'cure' was actually what sparked my interest initally but the way the emotional aspects of the disease is integrated in the storyline is really great and definitely emotive.

i cant actually think of something to criticise about that element of the story, it was so well done.

The trained carer was unrealistic, she shouldnt have been doing that job (especially at her age, she looked 24, way too young to get the necessary motivation and traning for the job). Normally they have masses of patience, its in their mindset, so she was a bad example.

Also, not many instances of the family blowing their top at the patient - in reality you see that a lot - although again alot of its down to personality, perhaps Franco's character and his (very hot indian) chick had that.

The alzheimer's component with regards to science is a bit less realistic. To date there are only three drugs available which provide limited relief and not a cure. The genetic link has been connected to the familial form of alzheimer's which tends to affect people in their 40s. The disease itself can lead to death within 8 years. There are many clinical trials going on at present and many more that have failed including a vaccine that caused patients encephalitis so had to be stopped. The focus of some of the newer drugs is on a protein that accumulates and causes inflammation. As a field though neuroscience is still in its infancy.

mind you,its a film, you can hardly expect it to cover the details of a complex major disease correctly, or most viewers would get confused and/or bored.

the film is remarkably accurate for a relative's or laymans' observation of the events.

This was a film made by Fox. Be lucky they touched on the Alzheimer's plot with any depth at all.

Liked the film, in spite of watching it after a night flight  . I expected something different and a bit more scary after seeing the trailer but was pleasantly surprised! Very touching! Never seen any of the old films from begining to the end so wasn't able to see any referrences to other fims but still enjoyed this film! May now see the rest on Dvd  I'll be one of the first ones to go and see the sequel when it's out.
