I saw this yesterday morning - I enjoyed it a lot!

I've been "reading" the Bryan Lee O'Malley books lately (I'm just about to start on vol 3 at the moment) and, although I'm no expert in this area, the film looked like quite a nicely done adaptation to me. I thought it was a really refreshing film. It's completely out of the mainstream, full of teenage angst, quirky humour, cool visual touches, Geeky and with some surprisingly good music too.

Great performances from the two leads Cera (Scott) and Winstead (Ramona) and really fantastic support too from all the rest of the cast. Kieran Culkin (Scott's gay roommate), Ellen Wong (Scott's highscool gf) and Anna Kendrick (Scott's sister) are particularly worthy of mention.

If you haven't seen it yet - do so now. It beats any of your standard romcom fare hands down!

8.5 out of 10. :D

I saw a preview of this on the 12th August. Great visuals and humour throughout, with a style of filmmaking not really witnessed before by audiences. Fingers crossed it'll make up its disappointing box office performance with DVD and Blu-Ray sales.

I liked this movie, it had some good jokes etc but I was a bit disappointed as the trailer looked so good and I went inside the cinema with such high hopes and I did feel a bit let-down.

Finally caught this tonight in its final hours of cinema release (I figure its on its last lap because vey few cinema are showing it now).

What a lot of surreal nonsense. Nevertheless I enjoyed it, funny characters, inventive visuals (thought not as radical as many are making it out to be). The film had a hyper energetic and very kinetic flow. The fight sequences were actually very well choreagraphed (I'm quite a fan of Hong Kong martials arts movies) and very well edited (ie...not cut up into several incoherent pieces as most hollywood fight scenes adapt). I really liked some of the music too. I havent a clue what the orignal comics were like but this film didnt strike me as a tribute to comic fans anyway, it was more of a tribute to gamers, particularly gamers like me who grew up on Street Fighter, Tekken, Virtua Fighter etc and obviously younger generations. I really can't imagine this appealing to a broader audience even though there is still plenty here for the non gaming\comic\punk\rock folks to enjoy.

But the film is just way too wacky and nonsensically surreal to strike any sort of emotional reaction from me towards the angst of the protagonist and his girlfriends. Brandon Routh was my favourite character, cool, stupid and evil all at the same time.

So I give the film 7/10 for its energy, laughs and visuals but there are many elements that leave me unsatisfied unfortunately.
