Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Well after all this faffing about with uninviting people they couldn't have been less interested in our printouts - there was no guest list, they didn't take the printouts, heck they didn't even look at them. There was a free bar beforehand, and water and popcorn at the seats. A woman handed out raffle tickets to everyone, and someone won a trip to San Francisco - I was so jealous. Sat with bevvy, ejwrank and David and waved to cliveas. Had canadian_turtle in front of me who warned me not to kick her seat.
Some radio mod who I have never heard of introduced the film and tried to be funny - I was glad when he finally left! The screening was very full, I don't know whether there were any empty seats left.
Film was just as awesome the second time round. It really is a film of two halves, and they are both excellent.

Sounds like if they hadn't scared some people off by telling them they had an invalid ticket then the screening would have been heavily oversubscribed.

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
After warning my friend that we might not get in because of my cancelled tickets there was no problem in the end. They didn't glance at the tickets at all and when we went to the bar to grab a (free) drink we got another ticket in return because "you need it later". Never found out whatfor though. And there were still a few empty seats in the front row left in the end so it wasn't even full. Yay for free popcorn and water though sadly neither of us won the trip (and we'd already planned it into detail too)!
The movie was a lot better than I expected it to be, but then I had expected to not like it at all. Having never seen the original movies other than a few glances as a kid while switching channels I always thought the apes were quite scary and killed all humans but even if that is the case in any of the other movies (I still don't know) it wasn't in this one which made me like them a lot more.
I really enjoyed the first half of the movie where we saw adorable Ceasar growing up, and the paralels between this and what I had learned from Project Nim last Sunday about teaching chimps signing. But I felt a lack of interest in the second part unfortunately and felt that the talking made the movie much more unrealistic as apparently it's impossible for chimps to talk due to the structure of their mouth or jaw or something or another. I know the whole movie is of course fiction but they tried to make it believable and the talking really put me off. To some extend I can understand the use of "No" as it's more of a sound than a word, but "Ceasar is home" was too obvious Andy Serkis, unfortunately.
Still, it was quite enjoyable and I liked the visuals behind the title roll afterwards.

Totally agree! I took my illegal printout and enjoyed the heck out of the movie!Beate wrote:Well after all this faffing about with uninviting people they couldn't have been less interested in our printouts - there was no guest list, they didn't take the printouts, heck they didn't even look at them.

Kidding kidding. That was for annabrett who I'm sure is viciously stabbing at a little Indian voodoo doll after my earlier guilt-trip, more so now that we know there was also a San Francisco raffle. Sorry anna (& your +1).

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Free drinks, free popcorn, chance to win a trip to San Francisco... very nice.
Special effects were excellent, although the helicopter scene which Ian Lee (the guy who introduced the film) said was the best part of the film - well I thought "meh, nothing special"
My opinion of the film was pretty much the same - it was just a film. No memorable scenes, nothing to write home about. I was never a big fan of any of the older Apes movies, but I went into this one with an open mind. I like the way they used modern aspects (e.g., the animal testing) rather than Apes coming to earth in the original films, but that's about it.
I'm already thinking about my next screening.

Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
I found the most unbelievable part of the movie is
where the gorilla jumped off the bridge onto the helicoptor. The only way that animal could have reached the helicoptor is by following a parabolic path - once launched its effectively unpowered - and that should have taken it through the spinning blades. In order for it to have followed the path it did, nothing less than a giant catapult would have sufficed to give it such momentum. It didn't even have a run up.
