Coming up Beate!

a_person was lovely enough to take pity on my missing my marathon and got me into this screening. I also great to see PCX and MariaLionza again and to also meet Funthing and Raj101 for the first time too.

I knew the film had received mostly terrible reviews so far so expectations were at a minimum.

I found it shockingly filthy, gross, incredibly stupid...and very funny! The performances by the whole cast were likeable and silly including the villains. But it was also quite an enjoyable fantasy adventure to boot p*ying homage to numerous genre classics such as Dark Crystal, Conan the Barbarian, Princess Bride. Plenty of Gore too. The Gorgeous Natalie Portman was used well as a deceptive swashbuckling heroine sporting a Queen Amidala accent. The action scenes were surprisingly good and gory and more impressive special effects than I would have expected a comedy to be allowed to have.

There was a short and amusing q&a session at the end with one of the actors and the star/director (sorry dont know his name). I think most of the audience actually enjoyed the film and many of them stayed back for the q&a which is not a bad sign.

rating 7/10 - I agree with Raj and Kevinknapman that there were missed opportunities and gaps of humour but on the whole the film offered plenty.

What a clunker, I think Danny McBride would have done well to stay in the USA to promote the film, it's opened in the States this weekend and has absolutely tanked into 6th place even with Natalie Portman and James Franco in the lead.

I heard from someone on twitter that the Q&A was with Danny McBride (star but not the director. He did write it though) and Rasmus Hardiker who played Courtney.

Yes it was Danny McBride! Sorry I am not clued up about the crew behind this movie, for some reason I thought he directed it. He promoted the film well actually. He came on to the stage BEFORE the film started, cracked a a couple of anecdotes to get us in the mood. Its a good idea having us start the film with a grin already on our faces. At the Q&A, he was naturally funny and was much more comfortable than his fellow co-star (no, it wasnt James Franco! It was the other one ;) ). I recognised the the presenter from somewhere and Funthing pointed out to us, that he presents T4. He chaired the q&a very well too, keeping the momentum going unlike a certain q&a i've heard about that poor a_person had to endure!.

Great review, kk.

I found this surprising enjoyable. It felt like a cross between The Princess Bride and American Pie which provided a nice mixture of action and comedy. I did have a few laugh out loud moments but that was probably because I was in a cinema, I doubt I would have laughed as much if I had been watching this at home.

This had a strong cast and I enjoyed the witty banter between the characters. The evil wizard was a particular treat. I do feel that the crudeness was overdone a bit. The swearing and nudity was amusing early on, but the jokes did become slightly repetitive, and the vulgarity had worn thin by the end.

The Q&A was good. The first time I have been to a comedic Q&A! Danny McBride was good to listen to and particularly enthusiastic about this project. He was quite honest about the filming and production (he even said they made the special effects as cheap as possible). The actor who played Courtney was also there and the interaction between the two of the made it clear how much fun they had making the movie.

Overall I liked this film. A medieval romp with modern gags thrown in. I was caught up in the general mood of campness and silliness. The film does have some brilliant moments (the scene with the wise wizard is an example) but does miss the mark slightly in others and relies a bit heavily on sex references. 7/10.

It's very very puerile isn't it? but I did laugh watching the film and at least it felt quite fresh as they don't make many films like that anymore. Probably a guilty pleasure watching this film.
James Franco pretty much had to play it straight most of the film (same for Natalie Portman), which highlights even more why he was absolutely the wrong choice for hosting the Oscars. He's not a natural comedian. 5.5/10
