Re: Fast Girls
Saw this in Edinburgh last night. Very empty screening which was a shame as 9pm suited me fine and I enjoyed the film way more than I thought I would.
Good British film. Hope it does ok.
8/10 from me.

Re: Fast Girls
This was a bit of a disappointing evening really. The organisers were gloriously disorganised and hadn't even set up the drinks yet when we arrived. There were only a few crisps and as always at the Framestore the tiny space next to the screening room became so claustrophobic that we fled into the cinema and selected our seats, waiting for the others to do the same. And although there is a big sign at the door saying "No food or drinks allowed in the auditorium", everyone entered clutching their wine glasses and it didn't seem to matter.
The film was sooo cliched it was embarrassing. There was nothing there that we haven't seen a hundred times before, it wasn't original and it wasn't cute, it just felt like a big advertisting trailer for the Olympics. Bradley James is great as King Arthur, but as sports therapist he didn't convince and was wasted in a tiny role. Lenora Crichlow was quite good as the underprivileged Shania, but the attempt to bring social realism in was just too much, as was suddenly seeing Chelsea from Eastenders pop up as her sister. And hurray, the posh girl stood up to her pushy Dad and the underdog triumphed and out of nowhere we got a gold medal in some rather made-up athletics championship.
I don't mind sports films at all if there are done well (Invictus! The Blind Side!) but this wasn't even trying very hard so I am afraid I can't give it a medal.
After the film we got a quick prize draw - 3 bags with merchandise and 2 bundles of DVD's had to find new owners from numbers we had been given on postcards earlier in our goody bag. Among other numbers, 34, 35 and 63 were drawn. I had 36. Talk about a near miss. The cinema only has 61 seats but the numbers went up quite high into the sixties and some numbers did not have an owner - why make up more goody bags than there are people coming? The goody bag contained badges ("Because I am a Girl" in pink, briefly toyed with the idea to pin it on OH), some "100% coconut water" that tasted so awful that I spit it out when I tried it at home, and a blue shirt with "Because I am a Girl" on it in size S. My or OH's days of wearing size S are long over so if anyone fancies a shirt, let me know. I am not sexist, if you're a bloke and want to tell us you're a girl, you're welcome too. I also have Breo Sunglasses in purple for a small head and a weird pink Breo bracelet watch that I can hardly get over my wrist - and I have small wrists. So maybe they raided the kids department for these, who knows. They also had two more prizes which they are going to give away via twitter (@fastgirlsmovie). I think it's a watch and some jewellery but they are giving it to the person who tweets about the film the most with #fastgirls, and I am damned if I am going to spam people's timelines for that.
We then got a Q&A with two of the girls (not the main characters and no Bradley James either) so, having chosen strategic seats next to the exit, we scarpered quietly.

P.S. The taxi money never materialised. But then, we had tubed it anyway.

I enjoyed the film in the same way I'd enjoy a bit of junk food every now and then...I know its not quality but absolutely enjoyed every bit of it!
The characters where so cliché... the black and mixed race ones poor and dysfunctional, the well of white kid with the pushy parent living their sporting past through the child, love and jealousy over the (usually the coach) in this case the physio and it goes on.
But as I say I did enjoy it and really was on the edge of my seat during some of the races.

Re: Fast Girls
Caught up with this yesterday (for only £3.85, what with a combination of Nectar points and a Vuemore voucher) and absolutely loved it. I'd been gutted to miss the free preview, both as I really wanted to see it and as it was one of the few which have been available locally for me lately, but it was worth the wait. Yes, it was cliched and you could predict the outcome but it was still a fresh slant on an old story, which really brought it to life. Even as an extreme amateur I could certainly identify with the trauma of being dogged by injury, having to abandon your hopes and change your focus; maybe it was this which really engaged me. For once I didn't even mind feeling manipulated!
