Locke
Re: Locke
OMG I'm driving up the M6 next week. It is just as well I have done this trip many times before otherwise having seen this film, I think I would give up. Which is ultimately what the film did.
At least I know where I am going next, what my destination is, who I am going with and what I am going to do.... I have a purpose... The film hasn't.
Sorry 1/10 and only because Tom Hardy was reasonably good.

Re: Locke
Ok, I don't want to underestimate the potentially hypnotising effect Tom Hardy may have on me, but I think I'm in the 'like' category. I can see why some people didn't like it but I enjoyed the way it all unravelled. Hardy definitely carried it off, even with his calming, if somewhat dodgy Welsh accent.
Obviously Locke was quite a damaged individual who had hid a lot of his emotions - a man who likes to logically work through things by taking 'practical steps' (if I was his wife i would have wanted to scream at him every time he said that!). His obsession with the concrete, building etc. showed that he is a man that sees things through, even if his decision to do this is not the easy option to take.
I didn't find the conversations boring, some were very inspired and moved the film along as you could imagine a full history from the snippets of conversations. The awkwardness of the moment when he tells his son he loves him and he mishears it, Donal's humourous response at being landed in it and Bethan's obvious instability meant i was intrigued to see where it would go. I felt for his family. It was sad and Hardy was fantastic at portraying a man at a forced crossroads in his life - albeit all of his own doing.
I think this would be amazing on stage- with front row tickets to see Tom Hardy tackle the performance live of course! Not 100% I would have enjoyed it as much without Hardy - I thought he was that good! 7/10.
My barometer of a bad film is still that awful Sleeping Beauty from a few years ago. I sit there and think, would I prefer to be watching that instead? Often it is a resounding NO!
For me, that was a real 1/10!

Re: Locke
ugh. a tv movie at best.
the only potentially impressive thing is the budget, which might conceivably much less than its ticket sales haul. Apart from the professional camera work, anyone could make this movie, theres no expenses evident in it apart from the B+ actor of course.
Though don't get me wrong, the movie is well shot, its the premise that's the problem - an overnight car journey is a close to a cure for insomnia as a snooze in the backseat of your dads car on the way to infants school.

Re: Locke
To me this also seemed like a big long advert for BMW. However I do like Hardy and felt he acted well. I even liked the snippets of humour throughout the film. What I hated was the fact that this film doesn't go anywhere and when it finally ended I felt it all had been a waste of time. 1/10
Re: Locke
I know it's not a movie (just like Locke) but could we have a thread for reviews of Marmite? I feel like it would get a mode of 5 and finally end the analogy that anyone really cares strongly about it. Must have a great marketing department though (just like Locke).

I could listen to him on the radio now I've seen it. His voice was mesmerising and soothing - maybe it could help me sleep :0)alythonian wrote:Brilliant. Absolutely loved this. Mesmerising performance by Tom Hardy. Yes, it would have made an excellent radio play, but the performance of Tom Hardy was really special and the real time effect of the drive really helped the momentum.
Marmite indeed!
9/10 from me.

Re: Locke
yes his voice was very soothing. I thought it might be a marmite film, too. Put me in the 'hate it' camp tho. I really wanted to walk out but hung on just to see what happened at the end.
nothing did. I was a bit shocked and even more disappointed at the end that it just kind of stopped
.valda wrote:

The marketing team should be publically disgraced for the trailer - misleading is a huge understatement. If I had pa*d I might ask for my money back.
It felt like a paean to Tom Hardy with a side dish of homage to Bluetooth-enabled cars - with a side wink to BMW (I don't have a BMW but I do have a Bluetooth car - it often takes people by surprise when calls come in when i am driving).
TH was able to show a range of complex emotions but I think this claustrophobic talking-heads style was less sucessful in the cinema. I can imagine it would have been good in an small theatre. The big screen, to my mind, demands something 'more': this was 'less'.
I suggest that the first 10 mins be fused to the last 5 or so and it released as a short.
2/10 (as I didn't walk out so I was to a small extent hooked)
