I have just got three books in the series. Can anyone tell me how many there are? I'll read them after I've seen the film.

Thanks Beate. I was worried it was going to be another Harry Potter and I'd be sucked in and have months of reading ahead of me!

Saw this last night at Holloway thanks to MariaLionza.

Screen was about 85% full and the film started about 30mins late.

I have not read the book and have seen Battle Royale. I thought it was definitely worth a watch. As for a Dystopian story the rural setting worked well with a 1920's American depression feel but the modern capitol CGI did not quite pull it off. The acting was fine all round but the problem with this adaptation was it did not explain too well why it was called the Hunger games. The build up and mid story was fine but the conclusion was just too sudden for my liking and felt rather unsatisfactory.

The violence was in some places quite visceral and I thought unsuitable for a 12a. Ok there was no real gory blood.

One sticking point for me was Woody Harrelson's character as a mentor. At the start he was an indifferent drunk but like a switch, overnight he became the heroine's biggest supporter.

I did enjoy it and can see why it is aimed at the teen market. Now for me to read the book.

7.5-8/10

An odd observation and call me crazy if you will, but even though you guys have all been giving this glowing reviews, everyone seems to have reservations with something or the other. Tsoiboy's review alone (for example) seems to contain no less than 4 negatives and only 2 adequate positives (denoted by the use of the word "fine") yet the scoring is an extremely high 7.5/8.

BTW Not singling you out, Tsoiboy. Most of the other reviewers (here and on other sites) have also followed suit.
Something about this movie seems to have strongly agreed with the viewers despite its highly blatant flaws.

EDIT: I sound like a f**king troll!

I saw this at Holloway last night. Annoying that it wasn't full given how many people wanted tickets. No Amex requests. Most annoying, tickets said 8, but the film was actually scheduled to start at 8.25.

I still can't decide on a score for this. It's not bad, as such, I just think it could have been better. I realise most films are often never as good as the books they are based on, but I just felt like there were so many things missing. Something that bugged me was also pointed out by my +1 (she hasn't read the book):
there was no sense of how hard life was for the people in the districts, the hardships while they are in the games etc etc. And glossing over the violence to get the 12A rating, for me, really took away from the violence involved in the games. I didn't feel the desperation that ran through the book.
It's left me wondering whether some elements have been included from the next book... that said, the 2ish hours felt like they went quickly.
I especially felt let down by the scene with Rue. The outcome didn't change by how they did it, but it just seemed that it was changed unecessarily.
I wonder if I'd have appreciated it more not having read the book, or even if I'd not read the book the day before. It was perhaps all too fresh in my mind. I think I'd like to see it again to really get my head around it.

Not sure what it says about the film, but I dreamt about the film!

Saw this last night and felt this was very much a Battle Royale lite.

After a strong build up and some thrilling action sequences the ending felt flat and unsatisfying. Jennifer Lawrence though is terrific, the film alone is worth seeing for her strong central performance.
