SAATCHI GALLERY
Women Changing India
15th - 29th September 2011
India is changing and at the heart of the change are its women.
A date for your diary: "Women Changing India", a collection of photographs commissioned by BNP Paribas and produced in conjunction with Magnum Photos and Zubaan, will be exhibited in the Saatchi Gallery from 15th-29th September 2011 and will be open to you from 10am to 6pm every day, free of charge.
Against the backdrop of India's rapid growth into an emerging economic giant, the exhibition explores the vital role played by women in Indian society and the far-reaching changes they are promoting, both publicly and behind the scenes, in order to reshape the face of the country.
The exhibition is comprised of work by six renowned photographers from Magnum Photos: Olivia Arthur, Martine Franck, Raghu Rai, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Alex Webb and Patrick Zachmann. Each photographer explores a different theme: from all female Panchayats, women's microcredit and self-help groups, to women in Bollywood.
The exhibition is also accompanied by a book which showcases the photographs and includes essays by various Indian authors. This is published by Zubaan, an independent non-profit making feminist publishing house based in New Dehli.
BNP Paribas is also proud to support Pratham’s READ INDIA programme in connection with the exhibition. READ INDIA helps to improve the reading, writing and basic arithmetic skills of children aged 6-14 years. For many years, BNP Paribas has run initiatives to promote equal access to education in underprivileged neighbourhoods around the world. The READ INDIA programme fits with this commitment and is all the more important to us as a Bank, given our long-standing presence in India. Donations made during the Women Changing India exhibition will go directly to supporting READ INDIA’s rural and urban programmes.
“These remarkable photographs show the rapidly changing and diverse role women play in modern Indian society. BNP Paribas’s historic commitment to India has always placed human values at the very heart of our business, respecting diversity and striving to make this fast-changing country a better place for all. We are delighted to be showcasing ‘Women Changing India’ at the Saatchi Gallery - there is no better way of experiencing the fast-paced change at the heart of Indian society than through the lens of Magnum photographers,” said Ludovic de Montille, Chairman of BNP Paribas Group UK.
