I'm glad to hear the King's Speech is worth seeing, I might get a chance to see this one but have mixed feelings about theatre of well known films! Jumped at Duchess of Malfi though but the weather's so lovely I feel a tad guilty sitting in a dark room but have yet to see anything amiss at the Old Vic.

It's good to know it's quite snappy.

I mean when there is a well known film which overshadows it, though I didn't say that very well! My fear was it might be like reading a book after you've already seen the film and that's set part of it in your brain however good the book is. Sounds like it's worth watching though.

I saw The King's Speech a couple of weeks ago at the Richmond Theatre and really enjoyed it. Anyone worried that they'll just be seeing the film on stage shouldn't as it's not exactly the same. There's enough extra detail to make it worth seeing. There's more on the politics of the time and Churchill and the Archbishop of Canterbury feature more as a kind of Greek chorus. There's also a little more on Edward and Mrs Simpson's relationship with the Nazis. It is also more explicit about the decision to euthanise George V to control the timing of the news of his death.
Both Charles Edwards and Jonathan Hyde are excellent in the lead roles and strong enough to make you forget Firth and Rush for the duration. In fact the whole cast is fantastic though it's a shame that Joss Ackland's role (as George V) is so brief.
As long as you ignore the fact that we probably didn't need the play to be staged so soon after the film it's a highly entertaining couple of hours of theatre.

OH and I thought the King's Speech was excellent. I felt quite emotional at the end, thought I was going to cry. Glad they got a standing ovation.

For rest of review... what KK said .

Lovely to see Celini, Funthing, C_T and I suppose rather begrudgingly the Hood again. Thanks to Celini for getting us very good tickets.

I enjoyed the Kings Speech too.

I hadn't see the film or read the book so other than the speech impediment theme I didn't know what to expect.

I felt emotional too but was pleased of the outcome.

Brilliant characters and I felt they were well played.
