Re: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
I concur totally, actually I'm going to get Celine to write all my reviewsCelini wrote:What a fine action movie!
I went there without expecting much; I have rather poor memories of the previous episodes, but I would definitely recommend this one!
And if you can see it on Imax screen, I would say go for it! Some of the scenes are just breathtaking on such big screen!
The plot is everything but original, but it still works very well! The actors are all very well cast; I like Simon Pegg more and more and I actually really enjoy Jeremy Renner (that I hated (I don't know why!) in he Hurtlocker and the Town). Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, he is alright for a small person, I guess
The new gadgets are just awesome (I won't spoil anything), but I do regret the (heavy) BMW placement...
The direction is flawless (well done Mr Bird), apart from the last 5 minutes... why, oh why do they have to add a layer of cheese on an otherwise very fine movie!
8.5/10 (could have been 9 if they had spare us the last 5 min)
edit: I was really annoy by the dust on the projector lense as well!!!
from time to time it looked like someone was actually trying to blow it away!
I'm going to see it again at Swiss Cottage Imax, all brand spanking new

Re: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Enjoyed this immensely.
From the moments a (sadly underused) Josh Holloway runs across, than jumps off a building in Budapest I was hooked. The film hits the ground running and barely pauses for breath. This reaches it's peak in the Dubai sequence which makes thrilling use of the Burj Khalifa. The use of the IMAX format here is consistently breathtaking (and I'm not just referring to the scene with Léa Seydoux in a lift. Ahem).
The only downside of the quality of this sequence is that the remainder of the film felt slightly anticlimactic as a result. Not that there wasn't much to enjoy here. Jeremy Renner has some wonderful moments, a tense stand-off with Cruise and some amusing banter with Simon Pegg. I wouldn't complain if he did take over from Cruise as was originally rumoured. Anil Kapoor also has an amusing role as a sleazy satellite TV mogul and the final fight in a high-rise automated car park was visually effective. It's just that the Dubai sequence is so good that the remainder can't help but be slightly disappointing in comparison.
Director Brad Bird has made a very effective transition from animation to live-action and his ability to create exciting action sequences survives the move. Along with the screenwriters he also brings a lightness of touch and the film has a decent sense of it's own absurdity. As a result the film is just one long fun ride that you don't need to take too seriously because the filmmakers don't.
For the time being Tom Cruise still cuts it as an action hero, Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton are fine additions to the team and Simon Pegg brings some decent humour (which he only occasionally overplays). On the downside both Tom Wilkinson and Josh Holloway are underused and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Michael Nyqvist made for a rather underwhelming villain (not helped by the fact that his character's motivations were vague and not entirely convincing).
So the story isn't great and is really just an excuse to string the action set pieces together but who cares when the action is this good. So overall MI4 is two-thirds an almost perfect blockbuster but a fun and entertaining movie in it's entirety.

Re: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Glad you mentioned the soundtrack. Giaccino is my favourite new generation composer today. The are so many typical Giaccino signatures here, particularly with his strings during the "Lost" like melodrama scenes. But its his moments of creativity that really shines such as a cheeky Indian sitar rendition of the MI theme which then evolves into an Indian/Westen rock fusion. Brilliant. The opening was the best MI theme opening yet which avoids the heavy base sounds of the first 2 films. He has scored every JJ Abrams project (who directed MI3 and produced this one) and he also did all of Brad Bird's Pixar animated films. Throw in a Josh Holloway and "Lost" like moments in the film, we got a 1 degree of seperation :)canadian_turtle wrote:(the music of the film was by the brilliant Michael Giacchino btw)

Everything she said. 8/10canadian_turtle wrote:A film that starts of with Josh Holloway (no matter how old Sawyer is looking) can't go wrong! I enjoyed this one so much, wow. I have seen the first two MI films, but when they originally came out so didn't really remember them.
I did used to adore the television series and loved how the music mirrored the TV-show (the music of the film was by the brilliant Michael Giacchino btw) and the opening credits were very TV like too.
I do not have too much to say about Tom Cruise. He was fine, but he looked very old. The true stars of the movie in my eyes were Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner (the latter which I wasn't familiar with yet); they were fantastic and hilarious.
Imax seriously enhanced the experience, particularly so in scenes where heights were prominent, I totally gasped at some of the stuff that went on that looked much more spectacular/shocking because of the scale of the Imax screen. The dust was annoying though.
8.5/10
And yeh I noticed the dust too. I found it so irritating as sometimes I'd just be watching the dust thinking whether it was part of the film. At some point I thought I was imagining it.

I can't stand Tom Cruise, but this is a damn good time.

Every time I read someone elses review, I can't wait to see it again. For once I didn't close my eyes (too much) during some of the fighting. Roll on Bourne
